Wolverine softball team has a 'blast' at state

Wolverine seniors - Brandie Miller, Jessica Peacock, Erica Percich, Anna Anderson and Cassie Murphy - gathered around Coach Kevin Carlton after the state tournament.

Friday Harbor's softball team met its season goal and then some this weekend at Class A State Softball Tournament in Moses Lake May 28-29, 2004. The Wolverines won one game by a respectable margin and narrowly lost two contests.

"I'm thrilled with how our season turned out," said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton.

"We played with the best teams in the state," he added. "We played until the last day of the season."

Friday Harbor's seniors were disappointed after being eliminated but knew they played with some of the state's best.

"We were challenged to our full potential," said centerfielder Cassie Brophy.

"I'm really, really proud of our team," said outfielder Anna Anderson.

"It was a really good season…. State ended on a good note," said second baseman Brandie Miller.

"I'm happy with the way we played. We were really close in the two games we lost," first baseman Erica Percich said.

Sixteen teams enter the State Tourney and only 12 advance to the second day of play. Carlton told his players "there are a lot of teams who'd love to be in our place."

The Wolverines, who nearly upset the tourney's runner-up in their first game, accomplished an equally important goal by being competitive. "We had fun," Carlton said.

"The whole weekend was fun.... I think everybody had a good time there," said senior pitcher Jessica Peacock.

"It was so much fun," Brophy said. "I had a blast."

"I had an awesome time," Percich said. "I'm so appreciative of everybody."

"Everyone had a lot of fun," Anderson said. "We kept our spirits up the whole time."

Sixteen of the 21 Wolverines had parents who made the trek to the middle of the state. Several other relatives and non-relatives also cheered on Friday Harbor.

"That's pretty cool," said Carlton, noting more fans would've made the trip if they hadn't been working the busy Memorial Day Weekend in the islands.

"We have great kids and great parents," he added. "We had to have as many fans there as anybody."

Carlton commended his seniors for their contributions to this season. "I'm proud of my seniors…. All their leadership," the coach said.

Percich, the only senior to play all four years of high school for the Wolverines, was "the Great Dane Puppy… all knees and elbows," Carlton said. She developed into the best position player in her league. Percich pounded the ball on offense, cranking seven home runs in the regular season. She played first base as calm and collected as John Olerud.

"On and off the field, Erica's done everything I could ask a leader to do," Carlton said. "They don't come along that often with that talent and leadership."

Anderson saw limited action for the Wolverines but provided a monumental motivational boost. "Anna knew she wasn't going to play too much but she practiced as hard as she could. She cheered as hard she could," Carlton said. "If I had her heart in everybody we'd never lose."

Peacock returned to the mound this season after spending her junior year in Argentina. "Jessica filled the second pitcher's role tremendously," Carlton said. "She helped in the second game in Concrete that made the difference in us finishing second instead of third in the league. She went in and did a super job."

Brandie Miller provided valuable guidance to the other players. "Brandie always had a great attitude," Carlton said. "She's come a long way."

Miller also scorched the ball. "She was one of the best hitters on the team," Carlton said.

Brophy "overcame a ton of adversity" and was always positive, Carlton said. "You can't wipe the smile off her face."

Carlton is already thinking about next season but he won't forget the Class of 2004 players. "I'm sure going to miss these girls," he said.
