Friday Harbor’s softball team is making its fourth trip in three years to the Class A Fastpitch Softball Tournament after finishing fourth in the Tri-District Tournament Monday, May 24, 2004.

"We won two (games)," said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton. "We did what we had to do. We’re going back to state."

Friday Harbor (16-7) opens the state tourney in Moses Lake against Onalaska at 2 p.m. Friday, May 28. "Once you get there you just play hard and hope the ball goes your way," said Carlton said.

At the beginning of the season, the Wolverines set a goal of returning to Moses Lake. The Wolverines clinched a state berth by topping Cascade Christian 10-4 in the consolation semi-finals of Tri-District Tournament in Mount Vernon.

"I’m super proud of my girls," said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton. "They battled hard all season."

The Wolverines edged Charles Wright 2-0 in the first round of the tourney. Tri-District Champion Concrete sent the Wolverines to the consolation bracket with a 4-0 victory in the second round. After beating Cascade Christian, the Wolverines lost 6-0 in the third/fourth-place game to Northwest A League Champion Archbishop Murphy.

"Our league is taking three teams to state," Carlton said. "That says something about our league."

Beth Kelsey struck out nine batters and allowed only three hits in the Wolverines’ victory over Charles Wright. "Beth pitched a great game," Carlton said. "We played extremely well defensively."

Friday Harbor scored the first and winning run in the bottom of the first inning on a gutsy play. Shay Hopkins singled. Carlton signaled to the speedy baserunner to take off and keep running if Megan Vynne successfully bunted. Vynne put down a perfect bunt and Hopkins zipped to third. Hopkins scored on Natalie Chevalier’s sacrifice.

Hopkins smacked two base hits against Charles Wright. Erica Percich and Lauren Brem hit a single apiece.

Concrete’s Britt Howell struck out 16 Friday Harbor batters. "We didn’t play bad.... She just buzz-sawed us," Carlton said.

The Wolverines trailed 3-1 against Cascade Christian after two innings before breaking out for nine runs. Cassie Brophy went 4-for-4. Seniors Erica Percich and Brandie Miller hit 3-for-4. Hopkins rapped a single and double and stole two bases. Brem also rapped a single and double. Mackenzie Raab had two base hits. Chevalier and Lizzy Herbert hit a single apiece.

With a trip to state secured, Carlton played all his players in the third-fourth game against Archbishop Murphy.
