Westphalen and Gerhardstein win league doubles titleposted 10/27/03 Westphalen and Gerhardstein defeated senior Jake Byron and freshman Keller McNairy -- the Wolverines No. 2 doubles team -- 6-1, 6-3 to secure the trip to the state-qualifying Quad-District. Elliot Thomsen, the Wolverines No. 1 singles player, also must win a playoff with a District 2 to advance to Quad District. Thomsen narrowly lost to Coupeville’s Eric Taylor in the league finals. The foes played close matches throughout the season and their final match of the fall was no different. Thomsen won the first set 6-7 (8-6) but Taylor took the second set 7-5 and won the tie-breaker 6-2. Thomsen defeated Trevor Mueller, Coupeville’s No. 2 player, 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round. Taylor beat Friday Harbor No. 2 player -- senior Liam Knight -- 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. Mueller defeated Knight 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation round. Westphalen and Gerhardstein advanced to the finals by beating Coupeville’s No. 2 team of Brandon Kuschnereit and Bill Bond. Byron and McNairy trimmed Coupeville’s No. 1 team of Mike Johnson and Kent Turner 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Johnson and Turner won the consolation match against Kuschnereit and Bond 6-4, 6-3.
