Andrea Champlin pins Brave for first win

posted 12/23/03
Friday Harbor sophomore Andrea Champlin, who went from managing to wrestling last year, earned her first individual mat victory Tuesday, Dec. 16. One minute, 55 seconds into the 103-pound match against La Conner’s Luis Almaraz, Champlin pinned the Brave.

"I was excited for her and she was amped. She came off the mat grinning ear to ear," said coach Gordy Banry.

First-year wrestler George Meyer also notched his first pin. Meyer, wrestling up 30 pounds in the 215 division, stopped Evan Palmer 1:41 into the first round.

The Wolverines beat the upstart Braves -- this is the first year La Conner fielded a wrestling team -- 67-17.

Friday Harbor’s Jim Gossom (145) pinned Chad Deyo with two seconds remaining in the second period and Jason Grone (171) stuck La Conner’s Caleb Coffey 54 seconds into second round.

Wolverines winning by forfeit were: Kyle Miller (112), Adam Champlin (119), James Ausilio (125), Colby Leed (130), Willie Burns (155), John Gossom (189) and Pete Grosjacques (275).

La Conner’s Mike Konieczki (140) pinned Paul Espinoza and Ari Landworth (152) won by technical fall against Friday Harbor’s James Gull. The Braves’ James Davidson (160) won by forfeit.
