"Dane pulled a rabbit out of the hat," Friday Harbor coach Gordy Banry said of 135-pounder’s comeback. "It felt good. It felt really good," Foley said of securing a state meet entry. Gossom secured his second silver medal at regionals in as many years. "I’m tired," the 171-pounder said, smiling through his exhaustion. "John got second the hard way," the coach said of Gossom, who wrestled four matches in six hours. Freshman Kyle Miller (112 pounds), freshmen Jacob Foley (130) and sophomore Britt Banry (152) finished third and will attend the state tournament as alternates. Junior Jesse Pouillon (160) and sophomore Peter Grosjaques (275) placed fourth. "The guys wrestled really good today," Coach Banry said. The Wolverines compiled 88 points for a fifth-place finish. Concrete won the tourney with 217 points. Other team finishes were: 2. Tacoma Baptist 148, 3. Darrington 136.5, 4. Bellevue Christian 123, 5. Archbishop Murphy 61.5, 6. Cascade Christian 34 and 7. La Conner 33. Dane Foley received a first-round bye and then fell 5-1 in the second round to 135-pound champ Joe Suchon of Archbishop Murphy. The senior, who attended the state meet as an alternate two years ago, pinned David Kleefeld of Cascade Christian to guarantee at least a third-place finish. In a wrestle-back, competitors who go through the consolation bracket and haven’t lost to the loser of the final can challenge that competitor for second place. Foley challenged Darrington’s Jason Caveness and dominated the Logger 13-0. "There was no way I wasn’t going to state," Foley said. Gossom pinned Curtis Misanes of Darrington in the first round and stopped Archbishop Murphy’s Cory Larsen in the second round. In a strength-zapping finals, Erik Hoff of Tacoma Baptist beat Gossom 7-2. Forty-six minutes later Gossom defended his second-place finish by pinning Garrett Olsen of La Conner with 57 seconds remaining in the first period. "I just jumped around before the match and got my energy flowing again and gave it a good minute," Gossom said. Miller beat Cascade Christian’s Brad Hilty in the first round. He defeated Concrete’s Jack Reeves in the consolation final. "Kyle had a great day," Banry said. After receiving an opening-round bye, Jacob Foley was pinned by Tacoma Baptist’s Andrew Bishop. Foley pinned Concrete’s Russell Swinney and rolled Justin Aires 19-2 in the consolation finals. Britt Banry pinned freshman teammate James Gull in the first round before losing to Morgan Eliel of Bellevue Christian. Banry topped Tacoma Baptist’s Kevin Christie 19-2. He pinned Archbishop Murphy’s Jerrik Shaw with 28 seconds remaining in the first period of the consolation finals. Pouillon won his first-round match but lost in the second round. He out-maneuvered Archbishop Murphy’s Tony Gillan 24-17 before being pinned in the second round by Josh Vitzthum of Tacoma Baptist in the consolation finals. "Jesse came on," Banry said. Gosjacques received a first-round bye and lost to 275-pound champ Rich Loughnan of Darrington. He pinned Archbishop Murphy’s Andre Gillan before being pinned by Concrete’s Bob Browning with 19 seconds to go in the first round of the consolation finals. In other action, Friday Harbor freshmen Adam Champlin (119) and Paul Espinoza and sophomore Jim Gossom (145) posted a pins. Junior George Meyer turned in an 11-10 decision. Regionals was the final high school meet for Courtney Jones. "She was a first-year wrestler wrestling in a really tough weight," Coach Banry said. "She’s managed in the last couple weeks to have one, if not two six-minute matches." Two promising Wolverine wrestlers were unable to compete in the meet. Jason Grone, a junior, reaggravated a knee injury and Andrea Champlin missed her weight cut-off by two ounces. "We have a young team," Coach Banry said. "Dane and Courtney are the only ones going. So, it should be a really interesting season next year." |
