Wolverine wrestlers post eight pins against Braves

Adam Champlin, Andrea Champlin and Willie Burns earned their first pins before the home fans as Friday Harbor thumped La Conner 48-24 in a Northwest A/B League match Thursday, Jan. 15. George Meyer notched his first varsity win at home -- a pin -- for the Wolverines.

Andrea Champlin avoided a pin early in her 103-pound match and trailed Luis Almaraz 6-5 after the first period. Twice she came a fraction of a count away from a pin and led 11-8 going into the third round. Champlin didn’t need to beat the buzzer in the final period when she stopped Almaraz with 48 seconds to go in the third period.

Champlin’s younger brother Adam competed in the next contested weight class -- 119 pounds -- and dispatched Jordan Ray in one minute, 36 seconds.

After Colby Leed (125 pounds) pinned Jacob Willup in 3:17, Willie Burns (130) bulled Dustin Holt onto his back and pinned him in 52 seconds.

Jim Gossom (145) recorded the Wolverines’ fifth pin of the match in a minute, 20 seconds. Jason Grone (171) and John Gossom (189) recorded third-round pins.

Meyer (215) became the eighth Wolverine to win by pin when he stopped Evan Palmer 40 seconds into the second round.
