Foley finishes 1st, Banry 2nd at Logger Inviteposted 01/28/04
Jason Grone (171) finished third for the Wolverines. Bill Burns (125), John Gossom (171), George Meyer (189) and Pete Grosjacques placed fourth. The Wolverines sprang back after a rough start at Archbishop Murphy the previous day. "We just went in Saturday morning and looked like a whole 'nother team," said Friday Harbor coach Gordy Banry. "They weren't easy wins either. We just wrestled excellent." An injury hampered Britt Banry in the title match. He suffered a cut over an eye in the final. His coach, and father, stopped the bleeding with butterfly bandages but feared they wouldn't hold. Other coaches suggested using athletic tape. Hurrying to beat the timeout clock, the Gordy Banry applied the tape without gauze. He taped over one eye and half-covered the other. "Britt was basically wrestling the second round blind," Banry said. Wolverine wrestlers pin 5 straight foes, trim Wildcatsposted 01/28/04
In the first match of the meet, Friday Harbor's Kyle Miller won a 9-4 decision. The Wolverines only won one match -- a forfeit -- over the next eight matches. Jesse Pouillon was pinned in the 160-pound bout but his determination helped spark the Wolverines. Jason Grone (171), John Gossom (189) and George Meyer (215) pinned their foes in the first round. Pete Grosjacques (275) tied the match by stopping his opponent in 19 seconds. Andrea Champlin (103) won by forfeit, clinching the Wolverine victory. Friday Harbor improves to 5-2 in Northwest A League action. Archbishop Murphy is 2-4. |
