Wrestlers topple Tacoma Baptist 48-36

John Gossom, George Meyer and Colby Leed pinned their Tacoma Baptist foes to help lift Friday Harbor to a 48-36 non-league victory, Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.

Friday Harbor closes the regular season today, Monday, Feb. 2, by hosting Northwest A League foe Archbishop Murphy at 4:45 p.m.

After Tacoma Baptist won three consecutive matches, John Gossom (189 pounds) pinned Tacoma Baptist’s Brian Haithcox with 33 seconds left in the first period to tie the contest 24-24. Meyer (189) pumped up the Wolverines by sticking David Jordan 39 seconds into the second period.

Tacoma Baptist’s Zach Mudd (275) won the 275-pound match by forfeit. Friday Harbor’s Andrea Champlin (103) and Kyle Miller (112) won by forfeit before Leed (119) pinned Radar Johnson in 35 seconds.

The Wolverines secured the victory before the last match but it was the most exciting of the day: Tacoma Baptist’s Joel Pelesky (125) edged Willie Burns 7-5 in the Wolverines’ only overtime match this season. Burns bulled his way to 5-0 first period lead with a takedown and a near fall. He was up 5-2 going into the third period but Pelesky gained two points on a reversal and another on a penalty.

In a first overtime round the clock ticks down from one minute, but the first to score wins. Pelesky took down Burns as the buzzer sounded.

Jacob Foley (130) was pinned by Tacoma’s Andrew Bishop in the first match of the day, but Dane Foley (135) pinned Caleb a minute into the second round.

The Wolverines’s Paul Espinoza (140) stopped Joe Maki 38 seconds into the second round. Friday Harbor went up 18-6 after Jim Gossom (145) beat the buzzer, pinning Shawn Miller in the first period.

Tacoma Baptist regained the lead after David Alford (152) pinned Britt Banry, Erik Hoff (160) pinned Jesse Pouillon (160) and Josh Hoof pinned Jason Grone.

Friday Harbor’s Jacob Foley, Barny, John Gossom and Grone won exhibition matches.

103 - Andrea Champlin (Friday Harbor) won by forfeit.

112 - Kyle Miller (F) won by forfeit.

119 - Colby Leed (F) pinned Radar Johnson, :35.

125 - Joel Pelesky (Tacoma Baptist) 7-5 overtime decison over Willie Burns.

130 - Andrew Bishop (T) pinned Jacob Foley, 1:43.

135 - Dane Foley (F) pinned Caleb Hammes, 2:59.

140 - Paul Espinoza (F) pinned Joe Maki, 3:22.

145 - Jim Gossom (F) pinned Shawn Miller, 1:59.

152 - David Alford (T) pinned Britt Banry, 3:42.

160 - Erik Hoff (T) pinned Jesse Pouillon, 1:10.

171 - Josh Hoff (T) pinned Jason Grone, 3:58.

189 - John Gossom (F) pinned Brian Haithcox, 1:27.

215 - George Meyer (F) pinned David Jordan, 2:39.

275 - Zach Mudd (T) won by forfeit.
