Friday Harbor High School 2002-2003 Wrestling

Leed, Grosjacques, Grone pin Loggers

Colby Leed, Peter Grosjacques and Jason Grone pinned their Darrington foes as the Wolverines topped the Loggers 66-18 in Northwest A/B wrestling action Thursday, Jan. 8.

Leed stopped Max Paris with 10 seconds remaining in the first period of the 119-pound match. Grone pinned Curstis Misanes 35 seconds into the 171-pound bout. Grosjacques stuck Rich Loughnan with 1:01 left in the 275-pound match.

Darrington won the other two contested matches: Justin Friddle (130) pinned James Ausilio and Jason Caveness (135) pinned Bill Burns.

Six Friday Harbor wrestlers compete in Sultan Invite finals

Three Friday Harbor wrestlers finished champions at the Sultan Invitational Jan. 1 and three were runners-up.

"Overall, our guys did really well. It was a tough meet," said Friday Harbor coach Gordy Banry.

Colby Leed (119 pounds), Jason Grone (171) and Pete Grosjacques (275) finished first. Andrea Champlin (103), Bill Burns (130) and John Gossom (171) placed second.

Friday Harbor wrestlers go 2-1 at triple dual

Friday Harbor’s wrestling team won two matches and lost one at a triple-dual Saturday, Dec. 20.

"We had a good Saturday," said Friday Harbor coach Gordy Banry. "There was some really good matches."

The Wolverines doubled up host Bellevue Christian 42-21 and conquered Archbishop 54-30. Toledo-Winlock beat Friday Harbor 49-12.

Adam Champlin (112) posted his first win as a Wolverine. He pinned a Bellevue Christian foe in the first-round.

Willie Burns (130) also earned his first individual victory. He pinned his Archbiship Murphy opponent in the first round.

Colby Leed (125) won all three of his matches, including one by a second-round pin.

Jim Gossom (145), Jason Grone (171) and John Gossom (189) defeated their Archbishop and Bellevue Christian opponents before losing to experienced Toledo-Winlock grapplers.

Peter Grosjacques (275) faced a Toledo-Winlock wrestler who was undefeated the last two years. Grosjaques pinned the Toledo-Winlock foe in 48 seconds and stopped an Archbishop Murphy opponent in 15 seconds.

George Meyer (189) pinned his Archbishop Murphy rival in the first round.

Andrea Champlin (103) went three rounds against a Bellevue Christian opponent before being edged 13-11.

Kyle Miller (119) won 7-2 against a Bellevue Christian opponent who pinned him in the second round in a season-opening match.

Rick Armon (215), wrestled up a class. He won one match, lost two couple of close matches.

Jesse Pouillon (171) won an exhibition match.

Andrea Champlin pins Brave for first win

Friday Harbor sophomore Andrea Champlin, who went from managing to wrestling last year, earned her first individual mat victory Tuesday, Dec. 16. One minute, 55 seconds into the 103-pound match against La Conner’s Luis Almaraz, Champlin pinned the Brave.

"I was excited for her and she was amped. She came off the mat grinning ear to ear," said coach Gordy Banry.

First-year wrestler George Meyer also notched his first pin. Meyer, wrestling up 30 pounds in the 215 division, stopped Evan Palmer 1:41 into the first round.

The Wolverines beat the upstart Braves -- this is the first year La Conner fielded a wrestling team -- 67-17.

Friday Harbor’s Jim Gossom (145) pinned Chad Deyo with two seconds remaining in the second period and Jason Grone (171) stuck La Conner’s Caleb Coffey 54 seconds into second round.

Wolverines winning by forfeit were: Kyle Miller (112), Adam Champlin (119), James Ausilio (125), Colby Leed (130), Willie Burns (155), John Gossom (189) and Pete Grosjacques (275).

La Conner’s Mike Konieczki (140) pinned Paul Espinoza and Ari Landworth (152) won by technical fall against Friday Harbor’s James Gull. The Braves’ James Davidson (160) won by forfeit.

Concrete grapplers beat Wolverines

Four Friday Harbor wrestlers pinned Concrete foes but the host Lions tallied seven pins en route to a 54-27 Northwest A League victory Thursday, Dec. 11.

James Gull notched his first pin as a Wolverine by sticking Corren Wright 53 seconds into the 152-pound match. Peter Grosjaques (275) also tallied his first pin of his Friday Harbor career by stopping Bob Browning one minute, 11 seconds into the first round.

John Gossom (189) pinned Zach Parker 1:10 into the third period. Colby Leed (119) pinned Concrete’s Nick Fallis in 45 seconds. Jason Grone (171) pinned Jacob Eldridge 1:26 into the first period.

Friday Harbor’s Jim Gossom (145) pinned Tim Walden in the third round.

Jesse Pouillon (171) won an exhibition match.

Loggers fall on mat to Wolverines

Friday Harbor’s Peter Grosjacques stopped Darrington’s Jake White in a minute and a half into the 275-pound match to notch his first pin as a Wolverine Dec. 9. Friday Harbor beat the Loggers 54-22 the Northwest A/B League dual.

Jason Grone (171) pinned Darrington’s Ray Ankrum 47 seconds into the third period.

Grone starts grappling season with victory

Friday Harbor’s Jason Grone opened the 2003-04 wrestling season Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 with a first-round pin against Bellevue Christian’s David Kim. The Vikings spoiled the Wolverines home opener though, winning the dual meet 44-18.

Grone pinned Kim in 39 seconds in the 171-pound division. John Gossom (189) and Pete Grosjacques earned wins by forfeit.

Jim Gossom (145) was defeated 14-2. Five Wolverines experienced their first tests on the high school mats: Adam Champlin (112) lost in a 10-2 decision; Kyle Miller (119) was pinned in the the second round; Willie Burns (130) was pinned in the first round; Loch Stimpson (160) was pinned in the the second round; and George Myers (215) was pinned in the first round.

Friday Harbor was unable to fill five of the weight classes as several of the 26 Wolverine wrestlers were not eligible, mostly due to a lack of practicing or injuries.
