Orcas dominates Onalaska 33-12;
Vikings advance to quarter-finals

posted 11/16/03
Orcas Island dominated Onalaska 33-12 in the first round of the Class A State Tournament Nov. 15, 2003. The Vikings (9-1) advance to the quarter-finals next weekend when they will play Cascade Christian (10-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 in Sumner.

The Vikings, who lost by a touchdown to Onalaska in the opening round last year, ruled the Loggers' rain-soaked and wind-swept home turf this year. Orcas' offense built a 33-12 lead by slicing through the Onalaska defense via mostly short gains on the ground and through the air. The Viking defense punished the Loggers most of the game: The Loggers second touchdown didn't come until the final ticks of the clock.

Hunter Easterling's 42-yard run set the Vikings' first score -- a 2-yard dive by Tristan Savell in the first quarter. The Vikings increased their lead to 12-0 late in the first period after Easterling ran seven yards into the end zone.

Onalaska drew within a touchdown early in the second quarter but Orcas regained a two-touchdown lead by halftime. Savell, from the fullback position, punched the ball in from two yards out to score and Ryan Harvey kicked the PAT. The Vikings led 19-6.

Andrew Ihlenfeldt carried the ball four yards for Orcas Island's fourth touchdown. Harvey booted the extra point and the Vikings led 26-6 with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter.

Savell blocked a punt, scooped it up and rumbled to the one-yard line. On the next play he scored on the Orcas Island's fifth touchdown. The PAT was good and Orcas lead Onalaska 33-6 with 7:34 remaining in the third quarter.

The Vikings' defense stifled Onalaska's offense. The Loggers didn't come close to the goal line until five seconds to go when the Viking reserves were playing.

Ihlenfeldt and David Kimple picked off passes and Colin Gaylord recovered a fumble for the Vikings.

Onalaska finished the season 8-3.
