Wolverine baseball team survives Wolvesposted 04/27/05
"We squeaked another one out," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin of the home victory. "The boys played pretty well again. Coupeville is much improved," Warin said of the Wolves. Once again solid defense helped Peter Shanks notch the win for the Wolverines. Friday Harbor’s outfielders held a couple of deep-hitting Wolves to singles. "The outfield is doing really well," Warin said of leftfielder Tim Cumming, centerfielder Jesse Woodruff and rightfielder Trefor Bacon. Jesse Woodruff hit a single and double for the Wolverines. Tim Cumming singled and drove 2 runs. Eric Rothlisberger rapped a pair of base hits. Shanks doubled in a run and Chazs Lawson had an RBI. The Wolverines up their overall record to 7-2. "It was good to hand them their first (league) loss," said Eric Rothlisberger. "We executed better," Peter Shanks said. "We did the little things right, which ended up getting us the win." "We played pretty well defensively but we can hit better," Rothlisberger said. "Peter pitched well." Some dramatic defense helped senior pitcher Peter Shanks notch the win. With two outs and the bases loaded with Loggers in the top of the second inning, senior right fielder Trefor Bacon raced in, dove, snared the ball and rolled. In the sixth inning, first baseman Matt Rothlisberger stretched over the fence beyond the visitors dugout and gloved foul ball. The Wolverines closed the game with a couple of defensive gems. Third baseman Forrest Crawford dug out a sharp grounder and rifled it to first and shortstop Eric “Routine E.” Rothlisberger ranged deep on a ground ball, popped up and drilled it to first for the second out. Shanks stuck out the final batter. "That was awesome," Shanks said. "It’s never a bad time to win." "They’ve definitely been the best team we played," he added. Jesse Woodruff wrapped two singles, drove in two runs and stole two bases. Matt Rothlisberger and Crawford smacked two base hits apiece. Chas Lawson singled in a run. Shanks struck out 7 batters, allowed 7 hits and walked 4.
