Friday Harbor baseball team trims Orcas 3-1

posted 05/13/05
Friday Harbor's baseball team is one win away from a perfect league season after edging Orcas 3-1 Thursday, May 12 at Orcas Island's Buck Park.

"It was a defensive struggle," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin.

Friday Harbor improves to 11-0 in Northwest A/B League play and 14-2 overall. Orcas is 3-8 and 6-10.

Peter Shanks, playing third baseman, provided a defensive gem. He dove flat-out, stopped a sharp grounder, popped up and threw out the Orcas runner at first. "He robbed that guy of a sure double," Warin said.

Orcas scored first in the inter-island contest. Cameron Kampaus, Colin Gaylord and Hunter Easterling loaded the bases with singles and Chandler Stone smacked a sacrifice fly to left field.

Friday Harbor went up in the fifth inning. Peters Shanks was hit by a pitch and was replaced by pitch runner JoHannes Paul. He stole second. Matt Rothlisberger singled Paul home. The Viking pitcher hit Forrest Crawford, walked Tim Cumming and Trefor Bacon and the Wolverines led 3-1.

The Wolverines scored their third run in the seventh inning. Matt Rothlisberger singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Crawford rapped a base hit driving home Rothlisberger.

Miles Murphy also cracked a base hit for the Wolverines.

Chas Lawson picked up the win in relief for the Wolverines. He pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless and hitless innings.
