posted 11/04/04
The Friday Harbor's 16-0 boys soccer squad is not only racking up the victories on the field, they also are posting high marks in the classroom: The 2004 Wolverines are the Class 1A State Academic Champions.

Friday Harbor compiled a 3.66 team grade-point average and received the high honor from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Friday Harbor's 2004 boys soccer team blanked Lopez 8-0 Wednesday, Nov. 3 to become the first Wolverine boys or girls soccer team to win a post-season contest.

"It was nice. It was a good start," Friday Harbor coach Ron Duke said of the victory before a large home crowd.

The Wolverines (16-0) advance to the Northwest A/B District Championship against Mount Vernon Christian (14-2-1) at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at Mount Vernon High School. The winner and the loser of that contest advance to the Class A/B State Quarterfinals.

Lopez meets Snohomish County Christian Saturday, Nov. 6 at Mount Vernon High School in a loser-out game.

The Wolverines were not overlooking the Lobos, who ousted Orcas 3-2 Monday, Nov. 1. "Even though we beat them 9-1, we didn't take them lightly," Duke said. "We respect Lopez."

"I thought Lopez was really scrappy. They never gave up," Duke added.

The Lobos kept the speedy, high-scoring Wolverine offense out of the net for 30 minutes. Friday Harbor ignited after that though, scoring three goals in four minutes. Senior Carl Billington lofted a pass to freshman Matthew Porter, who headed in the first score with about nine and a half minutes left in the half. Billington fed Porter again two minutes later. Senior JoHannes Paul threaded a solo shot into the goal with 5:30 remaining in the period.

"We were building and building and finally the timing comes down," Duke said.

Lopez held Friday Harbor scoreless for 13 minutes in the second half until sophomore Mario Nunez scored on an assist from senior Trefor Bacon. Felipe Lopez booted his first goal with 18 and half minutes to go. Bacon scored on a long shot with about 11 and a half minutes remaining. A minute later Lopez sent a shot off the Lobo goalie's hands. Billington capped the scoring with a minute on the clock.
