Wolverine football team ranked No. 4 in polls

posted 09/23/04
Friday Harbor High School's football team, after pounding Granite Falls 55-14 Sept. 17, earned a No. 4 ranking in the Associated Press and Seattle Times Class 1A football polls this week.

"They were much bigger physically but we were much quicker," said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford. "Our players played with a lot of intensity and executed very well."

Friday Harbor (2-0) tallied 378 yards of offense at Class 2A Granite Falls. Friday Harbor scored 21 points in seven minutes. A lightning storm, which knocked out the lights and sent the fans and players for cover, didn't zap the Wolverines. They led 35-14 at the half and added 20 more points in the second half.

The Wolverines averaged more than nine yards a carry and finished with 335 yards on the ground. Tyler Roberts punished the Tigers for 192 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns. David Ahrenius compiled 67 yards on 10 attempts and scored two touchdowns. Cole Franklin also had a rushing touchdown. Franklin also tossed a touchdown pass to Tyler Hart. Dwight Ware booted seven PATs.

Friday Harbor's defense held the Tigers to 141 yards offense. That total included plays of 45 and 85 yards.

"We had good team defense," Ledford said.

"I was extremely proud of our defensive line," Ledford said of Jason Grone, August McKenna and George Myers.

Grone led the defense with nine tackles. Brock McNairy had eight and Tim Cumming made seven sticks.

The defense shined from the start. Roberts picked a Tigers pass, setting up the Wolverine offense on the 5-yard line.

"Tyler Roberts had an outstanding game," Ledford said of the senior who made five tackles.

The defense thrilled the Wolverine faithful even at the end of the game. Chas Lawson tipped a pass, Colby Leed pulled the ball in and raced 99 yards for the Friday Harbor's final touchdown.

Friday Harbor starts conference play this week. The Wolverines host La Conner at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24.
