Wolverines send ailing coach off with win
By Matt Pranger posted 10/05/04
"We love you Coach," the team cheered in unison after presenting Ledford with a football and card signed by the entire team. "I'm just proud of all of them," Ledford said of his players. Ledford, who coached high school football for more than two dozen years in Georgia, is being checked for a serious medical condition. Tests early this week (Oct. 4-6) will determine if Ledford can return and finish the season with the Wolverines or stay for treatment. San Juan Islander will post updates as they are received. Friday Harbor's players didn't cause their coach any extra stress during the Coupeville contest: The Wolverines built a 42-0 lead before the Wolves scored on a 60-yard pass play with about five minutes to go in the game.
"The kids came out of the gate real strong," Ledford said. "I credit their focus and intensity." "They (Coupeville) are a tough team.... We out-played them," said senior running back/linebacker David Ahrenius. Ledford commended sophomores Trent Roberts and Brock McNairy for "a great job." Roberts replaced his older brother Tyler in the backfield, keeping Friday Harbor's rushing attack as potent as in its four other blowouts. "Coupeville is a good team but I don't think they were ready for how hard we hit," the younger Roberts said. "The line did an awesome job on offense and defense." "It was the line's job to put them back on their heels and we did," said lineman Jason Grone. McNairy, a split end and defensive back, shined on offense, defense and special teams. "Everybody played well," McNairy said. "Everybody swarmed to the ball." "We're definitely improving each week," McNairy said of the Wolverines who have outscored their four opponents 144-34. McNairy's 40-yard punt return and senior Winslow Cobos' 17-yard run set up the Wolverines' first touchdown -- a 23-yard toss from junior Chas Lawson to sophomore Tyler Hart with 7:43 in the first quarter. Junior Dwight Ware booted the first of seven extra points.
Ahrenius' 28-yard run and sophomore Loch Stimpson's 20-yard dash and junior Chas Lawson's fourth-down quarterback keeper set up Friday Harbor's second score. Lawson threaded the ball 20 yards to Tyler Hart with 1:06 remaining in the first period. Ahrenius broke free and scooted 83 yardstoe the end zone with 9:43 left in the first half. His mother Jeri was clanking her cowbell with a enough vigor to call home all the cattle on San Juan Island. Roberts scored on a 31-yard run with 6:58 left and the Wolverines led 28-0.
Ware pulled in a pass from sophomore Cole Franklin for a 25-yard gain that set up a 10-yard touchdown toss to Roberts with less than a minute to go in the third quarter. Roberts rambled 40 yards for the Wolverines' final TD with 10:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. Friday Harbor, 2-0 in the Northwest A League, is tied for first with Concrete and Orcas. Coupeville drops to 0-2 and 1-3. Friday Harbor travels to Charles Wright (1-3) for a contest at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004. "We're looking forward to playing Charles Wright," Ahrenius said. "They should be a good team this year." |
