Friday Harbor's football team welcomed their head coach back with a 43-14 victory at Charles Wright Academy Saturday, Oct. 9.

Coach Richard Ledford, who traveled to Georgia for medical tests, returned Saturday and was on the sidelines for the Wolverines win. "I'm very pleased with the coaches' preparing the team and the players' response," Ledford said. "Shannon Plummer, Darrin Scheffer and Greg Truesdale did outstanding work. Stuart Luckman also helped and will stay on with us."

"It was an honor for me to step in as acting coach, but now the real man's home," said Truesdale.

Ledford, who plans to return to Georgia for major surgery in December, thanked islanders for their support. "I want people to know how much I appreciate the outpouring of feeling and prayers…. My wife and I are just overwhelmed, overwhelmed by the love of this community," Ledford said.

Off-the-field concerns didn't affect the Wolverines, who jumped to a 21-0 lead at Charles Wright.

"It was a whole team effort," Truesdale said. "Everbody got to play and all of them played hard. I'm very proud of them."

Friday Harbor, ranked No. 4 in the Seattle Times Class 1A Poll, improves to 3-0 in the Northwest A League and 5-0 overall. Charles Wright is 0-3 and 1-4.

The Wolverines tallied 318 yards of offense. They rushed 44 times for 232 yards and had eight receptions for 86 yards.

David Ahrenius gained 94 yards on 12 carries. He returned a punt 36 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 23-yard run.

Winslow Cobos rushed for 72 yards on 11 attempts. Jesse Woodruff scored on a 12-yard sprint and Loch Stimpson punched the ball into the end zone on a four-yard sprint.

Chas Lawson threw a touchdown strike to Tyler Hart, who led Friday Harbor receivers with five passes for 71 yards.

Cole Franklin tossed five passes for 45 yards.

Friday Harbor scored after every touchdown. Dwight Ware booted five extra points and turned a broken play into a two-point conversion. After the ball got away from the Wolverine holder, Ware took it and scrambled before threading it to Matt Rothlisberger in the end zone.

The Wolverine defense also scored a touchdown. Defensive lineman Britt Banry, who led Friday Harbor with 10 tackles and a sack, shot into the Tarrier backfield and hit the Charle Wright quarterback, who pitched the ball into the hands of Chad Stoddard. The defensive end, who had nine tackles, rumbled 30 yards for a touchdown.

Colby Leed intercepted a pass for the Wolveirnes.

The Tarriers scored their first touchdown on a blocked field goal and a defensive miscue allowed a receiver to score the second one.
