With the victory, the 2004 Wolverines become their school's first footballl team to go undefeated in the regular season. The Wolverines, who advance to a Quarterfinal contest against La Conner (7-3) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 in Mount Vernon, are also the first Friday Harbor football team to rack up 10 victories in a single season.

"It's awesome. It's been a great year," said Friday Harbor junior Dwight Ware. "I can't wait for the next game."

"It's a good feeling," said junior Jesse Woodruff. "I think it (the decisive win) will pump us up for the next game."

"It was a good, hard-fought game between two relatively good teams," said senior defensive back Colby Leed. "They seemed to be a little physical but we kept our composure."

"It's great to get a win," said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford.

"I'm real proud of our kids for playing hard and to win. Its always good to get a shutout," the coach added.

Friday Harbor started slow against Ocosta (7-4) but went up 14-0 in the second quarter. A 15-yard pass from Cole Franklin to Tyler Hart set up a 14-yard touchdown run by Tyler Roberts. Dwight Ware, who went 4-0 in extra-point attempts, booted the PAT and the Wolverines led 7-0 with 5:53 to go in the half.

On the Wolverines next possession, Hart zipped 14 yards to the end zone for the Wolverines second touchdown.

Friday Harbor's players gained more momentum in the second half. "I'm real pleased with them coming out with a more up-tempo game in the second half," Ledford said.

In the third quarter, Trent Roberts recovered a fumble on the Wildcats 18-yard line and then caught an 11-yard Franklin pass for the Wolverines third touchdown.

Later in the third quarter, the Wolverine defense held on a fourth down and the offense took over on the Wildcats 30-yard line. Tyler Roberts and Chas Lawson rushed for eight and four yards before Lawson tossed the ball 18 yards to Hart for the Wolverines fourth touchdown.

Except for a couple of times, Friday Harbors defense didn't allow Ocosta's offense past the middle of the field. The Wildcat quarterback grew weary of the Wolverine lineman -- Tim Cumming, Pete GrosJacques, Jason Grone, Britt Banry and Daniel Olshefsky -- dumping him in the backfield.

The two times the Wildcats threatened the Wolverines defensive backs stepped up. Early in the game defensive back Jesse Woodruff intercepted a pass at the Wolverines 6-yard line and returned it 24 yards. The Wildcats didnt advance to the red zone again until the final period but Woodruff snuffed the drive with another pick. He returned it 90 yards but the play was called back on a block-in-the-back penalty.

La Conner eliminated Onalaska 19-13 on Nov. 13 to advance to the Quarterfinal. The Braves are 6-0 since consecutive losses Kings, Friday Harbor and Orcas Island.

"It's just a going to get harder, so you got to keep raising the bar," Olshefsky said.
