Clash of the Unbeaten: Friday Harbor faces Royalposted 11/26/04
In a contest that very likely will determine this year’s Class 1A State Champion, Friday Harbor (11-0) faces Royal (12-0) in a semi-final contest at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27 in Kennewick’s Lampson Stadium. The Knights and the Wolverines have kept scorekeepers busy. Royal, the SCAC champion and the top scoring team in Class 1A, outscored its dozen foes 627-73. Friday Harbor, the Northwest A/B League champion, scored 483 points to its opponents’ 106. Royal’s offense features a running back Class 4A schools would drool over. Junior Jeff Jack has rushed for a total of 1,492 yards this season on 177 carries. He led the SCAC in touchdowns with 34. Last week in Royal’s 21-0 quarterfinal victory over Tonasket, Jack booted his 80th consecutive extra-point, setting the single-season state record for 11-player football. The Knights are also potent in the air. Junior quarterback Ray Valle threw for 1,431 yards and 23 touchdowns in conference play. He completed 103 passes on 177 attempts and had 2 interceptions. Valle’s favorite target, senior James Dykes caught 40 passes for 542 yards. He averaged 13.8 yards per catch. Dykes scored 8 receiving touchdowns and had total of 12 against SCAC opponents. Dykes also secured a spot in the state record books in the Knights quarterfinal victory: He made his seventh career punt return touchdown, tying a mark set in 1989. Friday Harbor’s offense pounded out the touchdowns primarily on the ground. Senior running back Tyler Roberts leads the rushing attack but the Wolverines are deep in the backfield. Senior Winslow Cobos is picking up steam and junior David Ahrenius is a bruiser. Sophomore Trent Roberts is emerging as a versatile back and sophomore Loch Stimpson is also churning up the turf. Wolverine quarterbacks Chas Lawson, a junior, and Cole Franklin, a sophomore, proved equally effective this season and split duties 50-50. When the Wolverine quarterbacks went to the air, sophomore split end Tyler Hart and junior tight end Chad Stoddard pulled in passes for respectable gains. The Wolverines’ offensive linemen -- seniors Jason Grone and George Myers, juniors Tim Cumming, Pete GrosJacques and Britt Banry and sophomore Mike Fyrqvist -- won the battle at the scrimmage line all season, opening ample holes for Friday Harbor’s runners. Royal is as effective on defense as offense. The Knights notched six shutouts while limiting opponents to about 6 points a game. Friday Harbor allowed an average of 9.6 points per game. The Wolverines blanked two foes. They limited six opponents to a touchdown and only team scored more than a couple TDs against the Wolverines. |
