Friday Harbor started the game a little jittery. After a quick attempt on goal by E.L., the Wolverines settled down and took control of the game, regaining possession and transitioning to an explosive offensive attack. Despite numerous attempts on goal they were unable to find the back of the net. Near the end of the first half Evergreen Lutheran were able to capitalize on a defensive breakdown and get on the scoreboard. Friday Harbor came into the second half with a renewed vigor, quickly attacking the Owls' goal. Ten minutes into the half the wolverines were rewarded a direct kick 20 yards following a hard tackle. Junior Lillan Roquet placed a strong kick on goal barely beating the Evergreen's goalkeeper and bringing the score even. Minutes later Senior Shay Hopkins found Elena Porten unmarked and fired a quick pass to her. Porten took one control touch and fired a shot into the right corner of the goal. Though the attack continued Friday Harbor was unable to net any more goals, though the momentum seemed clearly in their favor. Midway in the half Evergreen Lutheran managed to get a goal on a breakaway bringing the score even. The intensity grew as both teams rallied to net the winning goal. With ten minutes to go Evergreen Lutheran capitalized on another breakdown and scored the game winning goal. Despite the end score I was very happy with the 2004 debut for the Lady Wolverines. They are playing real exciting and fun soccer to watch. The non-league match gave us a chance to see our form in action and identify some places we need to get up to speed on for our first league match against La Conner this Tuesday, September 114, 2004. Elena Porten had a stand out effort in Saturday's match. She has worked really hard on her technical skills and it shows. I think she will be a big threat this season. Sammy Michael also contributed a great effort in the midfield. Junior Sarah Anderson was steady and solid on defense.
