La Conner beats Wolverine girls soccer team

Game summary by Doug McCutchen

posted 09/16/04
What a heart breaker! Once again the Lady Wolverines dominated the game only to fall by giving up a couple of dinky goals and failing to get the ball in the goal. La Conner has a very strong team this season as was evidenced in the first half play. They made strong physical challenges on the ball and played with patience. They earned their first goal by catching the Wolverine defense offguard on a misplaced goal kick. Their second goal came ten minutes later on a fast break where the Wolverine defense hoped to catch them in an offsides position. Goalkeeper Anna McLaskey made several outstanding saves and did an admirable job commanding the defense. On offense, Friday Harbor was unable to net a goal despite enumerable attempts on La Conner's goal.

The Wolverines came into the second half with a fire lit underneath them. They clearly dominated the half with over a dozen excellent opportunities on goal. The lone goal for Friday Harbor in the match came from Senior Shay Hopkins as she received a sharp pass up the middle, turned, beat two defenders and placed the ball in the upper right corner of the goal. Hopkins provided great leadership and inspired play in the match. The last thirty minutes of the match had my blood pressure rocketing as attempt after attempt failed to trickle into the goal. In the final minutes of the game Friday Harbor was unable to control a ball that came in with a weird spin and bounce, bringing the score to 3-1.

Juniors Zoie Guidotti and Lillan Roquet anchored the midfield effort for the Wolverines. Natalie Chevalier played an excellent game in her debut at sweeper. Outside defenders Lindsey Youngquist and Sarah Anderson played a solid consistent match. Look for our defense to continue improving and our offense starting to hammer the back of the net!I have never seen so many shots on goal go unrewarded. The Lady Wolverines are already counting the days until their next meeting with La Conner! Thursday, September 16 we play new league member Coupleville at home, 4:45 p.m. start.
