Kelsey sisters combine for no-hitter

posted 05/12/05
Beth Kelsey and her younger sister Alysa ??? hurled five innings of no-hit fastpitch softball as Friday Harbor blanked Darrington 13-0 Tuesday, May 10.

"That’s pretty cool," said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton.

Beth upped her record to 12-2. The elder Kelsey struck out seven of nine batters during the first three innings. She walked two batters.

Alysa fanned one batter and didn’t allow a Logger to reach base.

Jenny Guard hit 4-for-4 and Lauren Brem went 2-for-3 for the Wolverines.

Friday Harbor improves to 6-2 in Northwest A/B League and clinches a second-place finish. The Wolverines are 10-3 overall.

Wolverine softball team surprises 3A team at tourney

posted 05/09/05
Friday Harbor’s softball squad had "a great, great tournament" at the Blaine Invitational Tournament Saturday, May 7, said coach Kevin Carlton. The Wolverines edged Evergreen Lutheran 2-1, were beaten 7-3 by host Blaine and upset Burlington-Edison 3-2.

The Wolverines scored the winning run in the sixth inning against Burlington-Edison. Lauren Brem was hit by a pitch. Pinch runner Shay Hopkins stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a grounder by Natalie Chevalier.

The Wolverine defense held the Bears in the seventh inning. A Burlington-Edison batter ripped a base hit up the middle and centerfielder Kiersten Radden threw home, where catcher Chevalier blocked the plate and applied the tag. “Kiersten just gunned it," Carlton said.

The batter-turned-base runner was thrown out attempting to reach third base. The next Burlington-Edison batter grounded out and the Wolverines recorded the upset.

"It was a confidence booster that we needed," Carlton said.

Beth Kelsey earned the win against Evergreen Lutheran, by striking out a dozen batters.

"Evergreen Lutheran is a very, very good Class B school," Carlton said.

Alysa Kelsey took the loss against Blaine but "did fine for a freshman," her coach said.

Friday Harbor improves to 9-3 for the season.
