"That was a clutch base hit," Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton said after the defensive battle. "We find ways to win the close games." The Wolverines boost their record to 7-2 in Northwest A/B League play and 11-3 overall. The Vikings are 5-4 in conference action and 6-4 overall. "That was a great, scrappy Orcas team," Carlton said. With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Lauren Brem led off with a single. Elena Porten hit into a fielder’s choice but went second on a passed ball. Porten scored on Chevalier’s base hit. Chevalier advanced to second on the throw home. She scored after Sarah Anderson reached base on an error. The Wolverines posted the first run of the game in the sixth inning. Anderson cracked a base hit and was replaced by pinch runner Anna McLaskey. Kiersten Radden bunted and reached base on an error but McLaskey was thrown out trying to take third. Radden went to second on the throw to third. With two outs, Jenny Guard ripped a single up the middle, scoring Radden. Orcas tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Tiffany Holtman reached base on an error and stole second. Anita Ilenfeldt singled to centerfield but Radden denied her an RBI. A defensive substituion, Radden rifled home the ball and Chevalier tagged out Holtman. Valerie Plummer popped a bloop hit down the first-base line and Holtman scored. Friday Harbor’s Beth Kelsey notched the win and improved to 13-2 for the season. She struck out 10 Viking batters, allowed four hits and walked one. Valerie Plummer struck out six Wolverines, walked none and gave up three hits over six innings. Jenole Peacock struckout one Friday Harbor batter, gave up three hits and two runs.
