Friday Harbor wrestlers wrap up season

updated 02/21/05

Friday Harbor senior Jason Grone battled hard to advance to the medal round of the Mat Classic XVII but the he came up a few points shy Friday, Feb. 18, 2005. Juniors Britt Banry and Danika Britain and sophomores Kyle Miller plan to parlay their experience into winning performances at next year’s state wrestling tournament.

"It always stinks to see a senior go but we have a couple here who hopefully will be back next year," said Friday Harbor coach Gordy Banry.

Tony Love of Liberty Bell earned an 11-6 decision over Grone in the opening round of the 171-pound division. Grone pinned Trevor Rollins of state champion Warden 45 seconds into the first round of consolation action. Fifth-place finisher Aaron Cornett of Ocosta worked for a 12-7 decision over Grone and advance to the medal rounds.

"Jason had a heck of a last match for his high school career," Coach Banry said.

Britt Banry faced some tough competition in the 160-pound division. Justin Thompson of Oroville, the sixth-place finisher, pinned Banry 2:48 into the opening round. Jeff McNally of Wahkiakum, the seventh-place finisher, pinned Banry 3:30 into the first round of consolation action.

Kevin Cook of Toledo pinned Miller 1:09. Miller lost by technical fall (16-1) in the first round of consolation matches, but refused to give up a pin to seventh-place finisher CJ Carver of Royal. Miller remembered Carver, a middle linebacker on Royal’s state champion football team, which beat the Wolverines in the semi-finals.

"I try not to give up," Miller said. "Just don’t get pinned."

Though he hoped to perform better, Miller was upbeat. "It was a good experience going my sophomore year," he said. "I can come back the next two years and hopefully take it (a title) or at least place."

The other Wolverine who made the trip -- 119-pound junior Danika Britain -- was impressed with the only state tournament that features nearly 900 athletes from the smallest to the largest schools. "It’s overwhelming. It’s not necessarily the number of people, it’s the energy they give off," Britain said.

Britain placed third in the 2005 Mat Classic Girls Invitational. The tourney within the tourney nearly doubled in participation from last year -- 118 female wrestlers competed this season.

Britain closed her season by pinning Wendy Parsons of Garfield in 3:40. Aminda Aasen of Elma pinned Britain in the first period. In Britain’s second outing, she started strong but Brittney Hiller of Klahowya pinned her in the first round.
