Friday Harbor boys basketball team came a bucket shy of snapping La Conner's 17-game win streak Friday, Feb. 11. The visiting Braves, after trailing for more than three quarters and finishing regulation tied 36-36 with Friday, nipped the Wolverines 46-42 in overtime.

The Wolverines finish Northwest A/B League play 9-5 and placed third. As the conference's No. 2 Class A team, Friday Harbor advances to the Tri-District Tournament. The Wolverines, 14-5 overall, will face a yet-to-be-determined team on Feb. 24 at Coupeville.

La Conner is 14-0 in Northwest A/B League action and 18-2 overall.

La Conner opened the season with a quadruple-overtime loss and one-point overtime defeat, but then rolled off 17 straight wins before the conference finale.

The Wolverines stunned the Braves by jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Friday Harbor denied the Braves sharp outside shooters and went up 27-18 at halftime. La Conner chipped away while the Wolverines struggled offensively in the second half. The Braves went up 35-34 with 3:53 to go in the fourth quarter but Friday Harbor’s defense stiffened, allowing only one more point before the buzzer.

The Wolverines went up 36-35 on Robbie Roe’s short jumper but La Conner knotted the game on a free-throw with 48 seconds to go. Both teams missed scoring opportunities in the final seconds.

Luke Keel, limited to two three-pointers in four quarters, drilled a trey and the Braves led 41-38 a minute into the four-minute extra period. Tyler Roberts swiped a La Conner pass and drove the court for a layup to pull the Wolverines within 1 point.

La Conner hit four free throws before Roe’s bucket closed the Braves’ lead to 44-42 with 45 seconds to go. A Brave added two more free throws and the Wolverines were unable to score.

John Hamilton paced the Wolverines with 13 points. Other Friday Harbor scorers were: Tyler Roberts 7, Robbie Roe 6, Chad Stoddard 7 and Tyler Hart 3.
