Friday Harbor boys conquer Shoreline Christian

Bouncing back from an overtime setback the night before to Darrington, Friday Harbor boys basketball team crushed Shoreline Christian 74-60 Saturday, Jan. 22.

Friday Harbor keeps its hopes for Northwest A/B League championship alive. The Wolverines are 8-2 and in second place, two games behind 9-0 La Conner. Friday Harbor plays four more league games, including at La Conner Friday, Jan. 28 and finishes the season at home against the Braves Feb. 11.

The Wolverines dominated the boards, moved the ball around adeptly and used balanced scoring.

Friday Harbor led most of the game and remained patient in the fourth quarter. ”They learned from Friday night and used it today,” Turnbull said.

Chad Stoddard led the Wolverines with 20 points. Tyler Hart and Tyler Roberts each contributed 15. John Hamilton chipped in 13 and Eric Rothlisberger 10. Dylan Gerharstein had 1.

Friday Harbor is 13-2 overall. Shoreline Christian is 5-6 in league and 7-8 for the season.

Wolverine girls rattle Crusaders

Friday Harbor girls basketball played even with Shoreline Christian into the final minutes of Northwest A/B League contest Saturday, Jan. 22, but fell 50-40.

”To play them as tight as we did in the first half, holy smokes,” Anderson said before being congratulated by the Shoreline Christian coaches.

The Crusaders are second in the league. They improve to 8-1. Friday Harbor is 3-7 and 6-9.

Friday Harbor led 25-24 at the half after the Wolverines hit 10 of 15 shots from the field. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied 34-34.

The Wolverine defense shut down Shoreline Christian’s Colleen Woods, who scored 10 in the first half but was held to 6 in the second half. Woods teammate Julia De Koekkoek took over though, scoring 15 of her game-high 18 points in the second half.

Madison Judkins paced the Wolverines with 17 points. Other Friday Harbor scorers were: Pearl Schuman 7, Sarah Anderson 6, Annie Bryant 5, Beth Kelsey 2, Lizzy Herbert 2.

Wolverine girls post rare win over Loggers

In their first victory over Darrington in nine years, the Friday Harbor girls basketball team buzzed the Loggers 47-37 Friday, Jan. 21 before the home crowd.

"Any time you can beat a team like Darrington you got to be happy,"said Friday Harbor coach Steve Anderson.

The Loggers beat the Wolverines by 18 points earlier this season and by 48 last year.

Friday Harbor led 22-18 at half but broke open the game in the third quarter, outscoring Darrington 11-3. Madison Judkins pumped in 10 of her team-high 13 points in the third quarter.

Seven other Wolverines scored. Megan Vynne had 7 points, Pearl Schuman 7, Annie Bryant 6, Sarah Anderson 4, Alysa Kelsea 4, Alana Sullivan 4, Lauren Peterson 2.


Logger boys slip by Wolverines in OT

Darrington escaped Friday Harbor with a 62-59 overtime win Friday, Jan. 21.

Though disappointed with the loss, the tight contest helped the Wolverines, said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull said. "We just don’t see that type of game too often," he said.

Friday Harbor led most of the game. The Wolverines were 30-20 in the second quarter and by 42-36 late in the third period. The Loggers chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter.

After Robbie Roe dumped in two, Friday Harbor led by four points with a minute, 44 seconds to go in the fourth quarter. Darrington scored a bucket at 1:20. The Wolverines worked the clock down to 30 seconds before the Loggers fouled. Friday Harbor missed the front end of the one-and-one and Darrington knotted the score at 53-53 with 21 seconds to go.

Tyler Roberts won the tip-off and Roe laid the ball in. The Loggers score the next seven points. Tyler Hart hit a jumper with 29 second remaining and then stole the inbound pass and laid in to draw the Wolverines within a point at 60-59. A Logger sank two free throws for a three-point lead. Friday Harbor missed two trey attempts in the final 25 seconds.

Darrington sank 22 of 27 free-throw shots. Kris Reece, who led all scorers with 25, hit 14 of 16 free throws and had 4 overtime points. Sean O’Connell scored 21 for the Loggers, including 4 in OT.

Friday Harbor was 13-for-24 from the free-throw line.

Tyler Roberts led the Wolverines with 14 points. John Hamilton pitched in 13. Hart finished with 7. Robbie Roe and Dylan Gerhardstein each contributed 6. Eric Rothlisberger had 3.

Wolverine girls beat Vikings

Friday Harbor girls basketball team Saturday, Jan. 15 posted its first victory over Orcas Island since the end of the 2002 season by trimming the visiting Vikings 39-34.

"We needed that," said Friday Harbor coach Steve Anderson, noting the Wolverines suffered several narrow losses this season. "We were close with everybody but Darrington."

"It was one of the best games we played all year," said senior Megan Vynne. "We were really intense and that really helped. It feels good to win."

"It was nice – well-needed," said senior Lizzy Herbert.
