Friday Harbor places 2nd at district baseball tourney

Friday Harbor's 9/10-year-old Little League team completed its outstanding season second in District 11 and one victory short of the state tournament. Burlington-Edison, in the District 11 Championship game Wednesday, July 20, ended Friday Harbor's comeback.

"They did awesome," said assistant coach John Kurtz. "It was amazing what they pulled off."

Friday Harbor won its first game, lost it second game and won three consecutive contests to stay alive in the double-elimination tourney in Mount Vernon.

"Everybody talked about our team being gutsy and having a lot of heart," said coach Brandon Lambright.

Austin Lambright struck out 17 batters over six innings in Friday Harbor's 8-1 opening-round victory over North Whidbey Thursday, July 14. "That was phenomenal," his father/coach Brandon Lambright said of the 1-hitter. "He gave Old Pops goosebumps."

"I gave him the game ball," the elder Lambright said. "He wanted to give it back to me because I taught him to pitch. It warms your heart."

Anacortes trimmed Friday Harbor 6-5 Saturday, July 16 on a play at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Friday Harbor beat South Whidbey 7-5 in the loser's bracket Sunday, July 17.

The island boys snuffed Sedro-Woolley's late rally for a 8-7 victory Monday, July 18. "They had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the sixth and we held them," said Coach Lambright.

Friday Harbor avenged their earlier loss to Anacortes with a 16-4 thumping. "We crushed them," Lambright said. Micah Powell pounded the ball, hitting 3-for-3 with three doubles and 6 RBI.

In their fifth game in five days July 20, Friday Harbor fell 7-3 to Burlington-Edison. The Tigers advance to the state championship in Centralia this weekend.

Friday Harbor's coaches and parents were "proud" of their players who spent nearly a week away from home, living out of a hotel, Lambright said.
