"It's the best birthday I could've asked for," said Stone, who completed 10 of 13 passes for 204 yards. "The guys said that it was their gift to me." "I told him (Stone) I wouldn't wish him happy birthday until after the game, just in case" said Hunter Easterling, who scored three touchdowns. The Vikings, ranked third in the Seattle Times B-11 football poll, were well-prepared for the No. 2 Crusaders. | ||

"We knew we had to come out and play our hearts out and that's what we did," said Easterling, who scored three touchdowns for the Vikings. "A lot of different kids contributed…. It was a good overall team effort," said Orcas coach Dennis Dahl. "The defense played pretty well," Dahl said. "Their offensive squad had some good athletes." Orcas senior running back Colin Gaylord scored the first points of the game on a 28-yard run with 3:59 to go in the first period. Tristan Savell booted the first of five extra points. Easterling made two big defensive stops in the final minutes of the first quarter. The free safety ran down Tacoma Baptist's Jeff Gudaitis at the 2-yard line, limiting the Crusaders to a 46-yard reception instead of a touchdown. Four plays later he sacked Tacoma Baptist quarterback Nathan Piwonski. Easterling picked his way around the end and scooted 75 yards up the sideline for his second touchdown with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter. "Good blocks, that's what it comes down to," Easterling said. The Crusaders closed the gap to 14-6 when Gudaitis scored on a 40-yard pass 4:13 before the half. That margin didn't last as Stone connected with Easterling for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 2:25 left in the half. The fleet-footed Easterling scored again with 71 second remaining in the half by returning a punt 55 yards. Tacoma Baptist cut the Vikings lead to 28-14 with 3:33 to go in the third quarter. The Viking offense responded in 90 seconds. Miles Murphy's 5-yard touchdown run, set up by a 45-yard toss from McLane Stone to his brother Chandler, squashed the Crusaders' hopes of a comeback. Chandler Stone led Orcas receivers with 81 yards. Orcas travels to Everett to face former Northwest A League foe Archbishop Murphy at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004.
