Orcas Island football team secures postseason berthStory by Matt Pranger updated 10/16/04
"It was nice to get that behind us," said Orcas coach Dennis Dahl. Orcas will make an eighth consecutive post-season appearance next month. "If you work hard and have a bit of luck, sometimes things work out," Dahl said. The Vikings, the top Class B-11 team from District 1, will play a pigtail game against the Southwest Pacific League's No. 3 finisher during the first week of November. If the Vikings win that contest, they advance to the first round of the B-11 State Tournament. Orcas led 19-7 at the half and built a five-touchdown lead before Darrington scored their second touchdown in the fourth quarter. Orcas senior Tristan Savell punched the ball into the end zone twice from the 4-yard line and once from the 1-yard line. Senior Hunter Easterling scored 65-yard and 51-yard runs and senior McLane Stone hit Colin Gaylord on a 34-yard touchdown reception. Sophomore Josh Mayson booted three extra-points. Orcas improves to 4-0 in league action and 6-2 overall. Vikings ground EaglesStory by Matt Pranger updated 09/29/04
"It was a good team performance," said Orcas coach Dennis Dahl. "The second team got in and everybody tried really hard." The host Vikings rebounded after losing to Archbishop Murphy the previous week. "We worked really hard…. We had a good week of practice and were well-prepared," Dahl said. Orcas controlled the game from the start with a powerful running attack. "We were able to run the ball on them early and get some scores and then wore them down a bit," Dahl said. Hunter Easterling scored three of the Vikings' touchdowns. The senior rushed for one, caught a pass for another and returned a kickoff for the third. McLane Stone connected with his brother Chandler Stone on a 48-yard touchdown reception. The two also hooked up on a 55-yard pass. "Our offensive and defensive lines played really well," Dahl noted. Dahl sent in the Viking junior varsity players in the middle of the third quarter. That squad scored two touchdowns and a safety. The Vikings improve to 2-2 and the Eagles fall to 2-2. |
