Orcas thumps Concrete; remains undefeated in league

Orcas Island’s football team bounded by Concrete for a 50-20 homecoming victory Saturday, Oct. 23. The Vikings improve to 7-0 in the Northwest A/B League play and are tied for first place with also undefeated Friday Harbor. The Vikings struck first against Concrete when McLane Stone connected with Hunter Easterling on a 46-yard pass play. Orcas missed the PAT but led 6-0 with 9:51 to go in the first period. Concrete gained its only lead with 5:19 to go in the first quarter. The Lions scored on a pass and booted the PAT. Stephan Bosch’s recovery of a Lion fumble set up the Vikings second touchdown -- a 2-yard dive by Savell at 10:36 in the second quarter. A 2-point conversion attempt failed but the Vikings led 12-7. Savell bulled his way in from 1 yard out for the Vikings third score. Orcas led 18-7 with 5:14 to go in the first half. Stone hit Gaylord on a 45-yard pass and Miles Murphy on a 15-yard pass before Easterling plunged in three yards into the end zone. A 2-point try failed and the Vikings led 24-7 with 2:16 in the second quarter. McLane Stone made a couple of long tosses to his brother Chandler before the Vikings fifth touchdown -- a 6-yard run by Gaylord. After a miscue on the PAT attempt, Easterling grabbed the ball and scurried into the end zone. Orcas led 32-7 with 9:09 left in the third quarter. Aaron Bennett’s fumble recovery after the ensuing set up the Vikings next touchdown -- a 2-yard run by Gaylord at 6:45 in the third period. James Talbott tipped a pass and regained control on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:57 remaining in the third. Savell booted the PAT and Orcas led 44-7. Concrete scored its second and third touchdowns in the final period. Backup Orcas quarterback Josh Mayson scored the Vikings final points on a bootleg with 3:22 to go.
