"We couldn’t stop their running game," said Orcas coach Dennis Dahl of No. 2-ranked Lind-Ritzville. The Broncos (11-0) advance to a semifinal contest against Wahkiakum (11-0). The No. 5-ranked Vikings finish their season 9-6 and finished second in the Northwest A/B League. Dahl was proud the Vikings’ season. "We were in the top eight teams of the state," Dahl said. "We would’ve liked to have gone farther, though." The Vikings played most of the game without Hunter Easterling, their top runner and a stalwart defender. The senior pulled an oblique muscle in his thigh. "He just couldn’t play in the second half," Dahl said. The Broncos scored on their first possession on Ashley’s 12-yard run. With 3:55 to go in the first quarter, Lind-Ritzville went up 14-0 on Travis Dewald’s 5-yard pass to Jake Kragt. Easterling picked off a pass to set up the Vikings first touchdown -- a 6-yard run by senior Colin Gaylord with :57 remaining in the first period. Senior Tristian Savell booted the PAT. Kragt scored the Broncos’ third touchdown on a 1-yard dive. Sam Whitman kicked his third PAT and Lind-Ritzville led 21-7 with 2:28 left in the first half. Orcas cut the Broncos’ lead to 21-14 with 1:32 to go in the third quarter: Savell powered into the end zone from two yards out and then booted the extra point. The Viking defense held the Broncos on the next possession but were unable to reach the end zone in the fourth quarter. Ashley added touchdowns runs of 1 and 17 yards. |
