Wolverine tennis team sweeps Districtposted 10/25/05
"It’s been a good year," said Friday Harbor coach Dick Barnes. "Probably, from top to bottom, this has been the strongest team I’ve ever had." Freshman Peter Duggins won the district singles title and senior Stephen Morrissey placed second. Junior Keller McNairy and freshman Josh Lehr took the doubles crown and seniors Dylan Gerhardstein and Alex Heeren finished second. The district’s top singles and doubles finishers earn berths to the state-qualifying Quad-District Tournament in May. The No. 2 finishers must win a pig-tail game next spring to enter Quad-District action. Duggins, Friday Harbor’s No. 1 singles player, beat Peter Dwersteg, Coupeville’s No. 2 player, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. Morrissey, the Wolverines’ No. 2 singles player, defeated Sam Thierstein by the same margin. In the opening round of doubles play, Gerhardstein and Heeren, Friday Harbor’s No. 1 team, beat Aaron Gavin and Andy Dwersteg, Coupeville’s No. 2 squad, 6-0, 6-1. McNairy and Lehr, Friday Harbor’s No. 2 team, blanked Jake Weaver and Josh LaPoint, Coupeville’s No. 1 team, 6-0, 6-0. "We smoked them," Barnes said of the his first-round victories. The Wolverines’ Nos. 1 and 2 have "pushed each other" all season and they continued that in the district tourney. Morrissey edged Duggins 6-4 in the first set of the championship match but Duggins trimmed him 6-4, 7-5 in the final two sets. The doubles championship went the same way. Heeren and Gerhardstein won the first set 6-4 but McNairy and Lehr rallied for 6-3, 6-4 set wins and the match victory. "None of them should have to lose," Barnes said. "Both went to three sets. There were some really good points. The crowd was jazzed." Heeren and Gerharstein secured a second-place finish by beating Weaver and LaPoint 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. |
