Friday Harbor 's baseball team finished the 2006 season among the top eight teams in Class A baseball Saturday, May 20. The Wolverines scored three runs in the sixth inning to edge Overlake 3-1 in first round of State Tournament. Kalama scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning of a 3-2 quarterfinal victory over the Wolverines.

"The guys played great today," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin. "Our defense was the best its been all year."

"The hardest thing about this loss was the realization that another great bunch of seniors have played their last game with us and they were so close to going to the Final Four."

Those seniors are pitcher/catcher Chas Lawson, shortstop Eric Rothlisberger, center fielder Jesse Woodruff and left fielder Tim Cumming.

"Winning state, of course, was the ultimate goal, but this season was a lot of fun," Cumming said. "It will be in my memory a long time."

"I had a lot of fun despite the loss," Lawson said.

Overalake scored one run in the third and took that lead into the sixth inning. The Wolverine fans were thankful for what they considered a bad call. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Eric Rothlisberger ripped the ball up the third baseline and it bounced over third base. The home plate umpire called it fair but the third base ump said it was foul. After a conference of the Blues, the third base ump ruled. Rothlisberger responded by rapping a double that keyed the Wolverine scoring.

Richie Ochoa, facing a 3-2 count, fouled off several pitches before holding the bat on the right pitch for a walk. Matt Rothlisberger singled in his brother and the Wolverines knotted the game. Forrest Crawford smacked a double, driving in Ochoa and advancing Matt Rothlisberger to third. He scored on a passed ball.

Lawson earned the win. He scattered 7 hits and walked 4.

Crawford and Matt Rothlisberger each went 2-for-3.

Kalama went up 1-0 in the second and held the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning. Crawford singled and Michael Knowles reached base on balls. Ryan Aylward's base hit loaded the bases. Jesse Woodruff connected and the Wolverines scored two runs on errors.

With one out in the top of the seventh, a Kalama batter doubled and the next batter hit a home run over the left-field fence.

Matt Rothlisberger hit 2-for-3.

Ochoa did not walk a Chinook batter.
