Wolverines haul in 60-7 win against Fisherman

Ilwaco crossed the end zone first in a Class 1A state playoff game Saturday, Nov. 12 at Edmonds Stadium, but Friday Harbor scored the next nine touchdowns for a 60-7 victory.

"The kids played really hard tonight," said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford. “It was real physical game on both sides of the ball.”

The Wolverines (11-0) advance to a quarterfinal contest against Cascade Christian (9-2) at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at Mount Vernon High School.

"The focus is to become a better football team this week in practice," Ledford said.

Friday Harbor punted on the first possession of the game. Ilwaco started with a long drive capped by a 38-yard touchdown run three minutes into the game. After kicking the PAT, they gained a rare lead on the Wolverines.

"I felt Ilwaco had a good game plan against us," Ledford said. "They showed that by moving the ball early."

The Fishermen’s lead slipped away as fast as a 50-pound king salmon snapping 6-pound line: Friday Harbor’s Tyler Hart returned the kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. Dwight Ware booted the PAT to knot the game at 7 with 8:49 remaining in the first quarter.

Friday Harbor’s defense stiffened allowing Ilwaco near the red zone only once more in 45 minutes. In that fourth quarter defensive stand, a mix of Wolverine starters and reserves held the Fisherman on a fourth-and-short.

"When they scored on us... it gave me an adrenaline rush for the rest of the game," said lineman Pete GrosJacques.

"I was shocked at first to see someone score but we answered back," Woodruff, a defensive back, said of the Fisherman’s early touchdown.

On the Wolverines’ third possession, Hart went around the end, shook a tackler and shot 53 yards down the sideline. Loch Stimpson scored on a 10-yard run and the Wolverines had the margin they would need.

Brock McNairy pulled in a a pass deflected by Chad Stoddard on Ilwaco’s next possession. Cole Franklin zipped the ball to Jesse Woodruff, who snagged the ball with one hand behind his back and raced to the end zone for a 31-yard touchdown reception. Friday Harbor led 19-7 with 16 seconds left in the first period.

"Jesse made an awesome catch," Ledford said.

Woodruff halted an Ilwaco drive when he recovered a fumble. The Wolverines fumbled the ball on their ensuing possession but got it back when Pete GrosJacques caused a Fisherman to cough it up. Andrew Scheffer recovered. Friday Harbor drove 44 yards and Ahrenius pounded 4 yards into the zone to put the Wolverines up 25-7 lead with 8:39 to go in the first half.

Franklin connected with Woodruff on a 23-yard touchdown pass and the Wolverines led 31-7 with 10 seconds before halftime.

Friday Harbor’s defense backed up Ilwaco three and half minutes into the second half. After an errant snap, Andrew Scheffer wrapped up the Fishermen’s punter in the end zone. The punter attempted to pass the ball and was whistled for grounding. The officials awarded the Wolverines a safety.

Franklin tossed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Trent Roberts and Friday Harbor built a 39-7 lead with 7:55 to go in the third quarter.

"Trent made a great run after a catch," Ledford said.

"I thought we played really awesome," said Friday Harbor quarterback Cole Franklin. "I did my job and the receivers did their job. Their second effort was really big."

Another botched punt led to 9 more points for the Wolverines. A snap sailed over the Fisherman punter’s head and into the end zone. He kicked it out of the end zone, giving Friday Harbor another safety but preventing a touchdown. That merely delayed 7 more points for the Wolverines: Ahrenius bounded 36 yards, was hit at the goal line and sailed in for a touchdown. Friday Harbor led 47-7.

Stimpson scored Friday Harbor’s eighth touchdown on a 27-yard run with 2:56 left in the third period. Ware kicked the PAT and the Wolverines went ahead 54-7.

"Loch really ran hard for us tonight," Ledford said.

Ahrenius put an exclamation mark on Friday Harbor’s offensive production with 5:40 to go in the game. The senior popped through a hole in the line and sprinted 86 yards for his third touchdown.

"David had some outstanding runs," Ledford said.
