Team work goes on off the field tooBy Matt Pranger

"You don’t have to be a so-called ‘jock’ to be part of the team," says Tyler Brow. "You can put out as much effort as a player when managing the team." The four-year manager’s hustle isn’t lost on the Friday Harbor’s head coach Richard Ledford. "Coach Richard Ledford says, "I get more running time and more yardage than anyone on the team." Brow and the other managers - Clayton Banry and Amber Stewart - run footballs on and off the field, fix broken equipment, tend to injured players’ requests, fill water bottles, towel off wet footballs and perform many other tasks. "We’re at every practice and every game.... It’s an incredible amount of work." Managers must meet the same academic and co-curricular activity standards as athletes to be part of teams. Brow met these standards his three years in high school and received a letter each season. "I’m very proud of that," Brow says. Brow enjoys working for Ledford and assistant coaches Shannon Plummer, Darrin Scheffer, Greg Truesdale, Mark Tompkins and Joey Burns. "I love working with each and every one of them," Brow says. "With Coach Ledford, we’re more a family, not just a team." Compliments about the Wolverine football team buoy Brow. "Win or lose, it helps me keep my head high," Brow says. "It makes me get more school spirit, so I can cheer these guys on as much as I do." Brow is working on a manager’s handbook that he hopes to publish. "It will show players how much effort the managers put out for everyone," Brow says. |
