Friday Harbor beats La Conner in overtimeBy Coach Doug McCutchen posted 09/15/05
Friday Harbor had a tentative start in the match, not coming to full speed until midway through the first half. Just as the Wolverines started to find their pace, a miscommunication resulted in a deflection off two Wolverine defenders and put La Conner up 1-0. Senior goalkeeper reorganized the defense forcing La Conner to low percentage outside shots. Moments later she made the save of the match as a long back spinning ball seemed destined to sneak into the upper right corner. McLaskey backpedaled, lept, and managed to just get a hand on the ball safely clearing it to the side. Unfortunately on the same series La Conner managed to find an open player on a corner who easily put the ball away. The Lady Wolverines came into the second half determined to win the match. Instantly they began attacking the Brave's goal, resulting in two goals in less than five minutes. First Lillan Roquet found both strikers running on goal and delivered a through ball that Jenny Guard was able to flick into the net. Moments later senior Tierney Cunningham set up a play which resulted in Roquet driving a wicked pass into freshman Whitney Porter who deftly put the ball away. Senior Fahren Carlson kept the team on track as she ceaselessly defended and led the transition onto offense. Roquet again found Porter who seemed destined to strike the ball home, but was taken down hard just outside the penalty box. Not letting the opportunity pass, Roquet launched a rocket over the Brave's defensive "wall" bringing the Wolverines up by one. The intensity of the game increased on both sides as the critical play at the midfield kept swinging back and forth. The Wolverine defense, led by senior Sarah Anderson, refused to back down. Beth Ware handled La Conner's standout strike with poise and power. Sophomore Kate Fyrquist continues to grow as smart, patient, and dependable outside defender. Despite the excellent defensive effort La Conner was able to tally the equalizer as a they found an open player on a corner. During the final moments of the regular time Friday Harbor's conditioning proved to be great benefit. They went into the overtime period like it was the start of the match and were rewarded by Zoie Guidotti's beautiful pass to Porter who scored the game winner at the end of the first overtime period. Look for Friday Harbor at home against Coupeville on Thursday and against Evergreen Lutheran Saturday. Scoring
