In the second half, FHHS (12-5) warmed up its offense, bringing the ball into the Raven penalty area and getting off several shots, but Forest Ridge keep Caroline Beyer kept the Wolverines out of the net. Friday Harbor's best chance came when they caught Beyer too far off her touchline, dribbled past her, only to have the resulting shot deflected by an alert defender. |

"They were good," noted junior defender Lindsey Youngquist after the game. "We spent the game adjusting to them, which made us tougher in front of the goal, and gave us more chances to score in the second half." Coach Doug McCutchen liked what he saw. "For the first time in four years, we showed we're competitive with the Seattle teams in the playoffs. This year, this team has a sense of success that transcends soccer - the leadership of the seniors and cocaptains, and the way these girls look after each other is what this team is all about. I couldn't be more proud of them. They gave it their all, tonight." Although the team loses eight seniors, the squad's prospects are bright with talented underclassmen and the news that Friday Harbor's U-13 team (which includes several eighth graders) won their league championship on Saturday as well. The Wolverines ended their season with the school's best record in the eleven-year history of the team at 12-5, in second place in the Northwest League, and with the best showing in a playoff game since the squad's fourth year against Lynden Christian, when the girls lost to the Lyncs 2-1. |
