Friday Harbor 5, Liberty Bell 2
Senior Natalie Chevalier ripped a two-run triple in the Wolverines’ opening-round victory over Liberty Bell. Jenny Guard and Kiersten Radden each rapped a pair of singles for the Wolverines. Friday Harbor spotted the Mountain Lions two runs in the first inning but held them at bay from there. The Wolverines tied the game in third inning. Radden singled and Sunny Pascoe reached base on an error. Chevalier drove them home with her shot over a fielder’s head against a strong wind. Friday Harbor went ahead in the sixth inning. Beth Ware reached base on balls and stole second. Sarah Anderson bunted safely and Ware scored on an error. Alysa Kelsey smacked a base hit and Anderson scored on an error. Radden singled, stole a base and scored on a passed ball. The sixth inning was costly to the Wolverines as Alysa Kelsey, Friday Harbor’s starting shortstop and No. 2 pitcher, popped out her knee while running from third to home. She did not play the rest of the tourney. Zillah 3, Friday Harbor 2 (9 innings) Friday Harbor senior Beth Kelsey struck out seven and scattered most of the Leopards’ eight hits. Zillah pitcher Amy Schilperoot gave up two hits. Friday Harbor went up 1-0 in the first inning. Jenny Guard led off with a bunt and scored on an error. The Leopards tied the game in the fifth. Neither team scored again until the ninth inning. Zillah added two in the top of the inning. A controversial call at the plate that would’ve been the Leopards’ second out proved costly to the Wolverines. Zillah added another run. Friday Harbor drew within a run with two outs in the ninth. Intentional runner Katie Shanks advanced from second to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball. The Wolverines couldn’t get another base runner on. Freeman 2, Friday Harbor 1 With one out, the Scotties had runners on first and third. A Scotty batter grounded up the first baseline and Kiersten Radden zipped the ball home. Chevalier appeared to have applied a tag on a Scotty baserunner but the umpire ruled her safe. The Wolverines scored their run in the first inning. Guard bunted safely and scored on a base hit by Ware single. Freeman tied the game in the fifth inning.
