Wolverine boys escape Braves 56-55
posted 1/12/2006
John Hamilton's putback with 10 seconds to go helped lift Friday Harbor to a 56-55 win at La Conner Tuesday, Jan. 10.
The Braves and Wolverines played a tight contest into the fourth quarter, when the Braves built a 6-point lead. With four minutes to go, Tommy Fowler drilled a three-pointer to trim La Conner's lead to 44-38.
That trey calmed the Wolverines, who outscored the Braves 18-11 down the stretch. "We were a little more patient and relaxed," said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull. "We used their aggressiveness against them."
The Wolverines shot 13-for-17 from the free-throw line, or 76 percent. That 13th point proved crucial as the Braves went 12-for-17 from the line.
Friday Harbor could have shot 82 percent from the line but chose not to. After Hamilton's basket put the Wolverines ahead, the Braves missed on their possession and fouled Fowler with three seconds to go. He missed the first of two free-throw shots and per his coach's instructions, intentionally doinked his second shot off the rim. The strategy worked as the Braves, who were out of timeouts, failed to score before the buzzer.
"They (The Braves) played really tough. They were ready to go," Turnbull said.
Hamilton scored 9 of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. He shot perfectly -- 7-for-7 -- at the free-throw line. Tyler Hart chipped in 11 for the Wolverines and Chad Stoddard contributed 10. Eric Rothlisberger had 6, Dylan Gerhardstein 3 and Brock McNairy 2.
Friday Harbor improves to 5-0 in Northwest A/B League play and 8-2 overall. The Wolverines host Concrete at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13.
La Conner drops to 2-3 in league play and 3-7 overall.
