Friday Harbor's defense tames Tigers;
Wolverines make school, Class 1A history

Friday Harbor High School boys basketball team shut down Napavine 39-19 Wednesday, March to earn their first state tourney opening-round win in school history. The Wolverines next meet defending state champion Bellevue Christian in a quarterfinal at 9 p.m. tonight in the SunDome. (We'll be posting updates at the end of each quarter as Matt calls them in.)

"It feels really good," Friday Harbor senior John Hamilton said after the contest. "It's the first win in school history at state for Class 1A."

"It was a good win for us," said senior Chris Benz. "We've got three more (games). We've got to get it done."

In limiting the Napavine Tigers to 19 points, Friday Harbor set a Class 1A State Tournament record for fewest points allowed. Granger set the previous lowest points record of 22 in a 2002 contest against Kettle Falls.

Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull's urged his players to concentrate on defense first. The Wolverines listened and held the Tigers scoreless for more than five minutes at the start of the contest.

"We just came out really intense," said Hamilton, who led all scorers with 11 points. He also blocked four shots.

"We didn't execute real well on offense but we really played good defense," said senior Chad Stoddard, who grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 7 points.

"Our players followed our game plan really well," Turnbull said.

Friday Harbor's swarming defense limited Tigers leading scorer Shad Griffith to 11 points -- 6 less than his season average. Napavine shot 8 for 42, or 19 percent, from the field while the Wolverines were 16 for 36, or 44 percent.

Junior Tyler Hart contributed 9 for the Wolverines. Eric Rothlisberger and Dylan Gerhardstein chipped in 4 apiece. Junior Andrew Scheffer and sophomore Tommy Fowler each pitched in 2.

Friday Harbor led 9-4 at the end of the first quarter and built a 20-9 halftime lead. The kept the pressure up in the third period by finishing it ahead 28-13.

The Wolverines lower than normal offensive production earned them a second record -- the least total points. Napavine and Friday Harbor's total of 58 is 2 points less than the previous mark. In that 2003 contest, Charles Wright trimmed River View 33-27.

Bellevue Christian advanced by beating Toledo 56-47.

In holding Napavine to 19, the Wolverines set a Class A state tournament record for lowest points allowed. The previous record was 22.

This evening the Wolverines will seek to avenge a Tri-District semifinal loss to Bellevue Christian. The Vikings, Class 1A's defending champs, advanced to the state quarterfinal by beating the Toledo Indians 56-47. Toledo kept an upset bid alive into the fourth quarter.

Friday Harbor starts Sweet 16 hoop action today

posted 3/1/2006
This year's Friday Harbor boys basketball team today, Wednesday, March 1, hope to accomplish a feat no other Wolverine boys hoop squad has done -- an opening-round victory in a state tournament. The Wolverines, in their first appearance in the Class 1A State Basketball Championships, face Napavine at 9 p.m. in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Friday Harbor, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A in the state's Associated Press poll last week, advanced to its first state tourney appearance in 15 years by posting one of its best seasons in school history. The Wolverines, 18-4 overall, dominated the Northwest A/B League with a 14-0 record -- Friday Harbor's best conference record since 1972.

Friday Harbor closed the regular season with 12 consecutive victories but second-ranked Bellevue Christian upended the Wolverines 60-50 in the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament semifinals. Friday Harbor finished fourth at the tourney after falling 60-58 to Cascade Christian (17-5) in the consolation final.

Napavine went 10-6 in the Southwest Washington 1A League play and tied for third with Ilwaco. The Tigers finished strong in the Southwest District Tournament. Napavine edged Kalama 43-40, trimmed Winlock 42-37 and won the district title by shaving Ilwaco 34-31.

If the Wolverines win their state tourney opener, they will meet one of the toughest teams in the tournament -- Bellevue Christian (20-2) or Toledo (22-2) -- in the quarterfinals. Bellevue Christian (20-2) won the 2005 Class 1A state title and is ranked No. 2 in the state. The Vikings went 14-0 in winning the Emerald City League. They defeated Friday Harbor 60-50 in Tri-District semifinal and beat Overlake 57-52 in the championship.

Toledo won the Southwest League with a 15-1 record. The Ilwaco Fishermen (13-10) gained a state berth by upsetting the Indians 45-37 in the opening round of the Southwest District tourney. Toledo rebounded by beating White Pass 71-43 and 62-42 to earn the district's third and final berth to the state tourney.

Top-ranked Brewster (21-1) loss to Bellevue Christian in the state championship game last year and the Bears will be seeking their eighth state hoop title. Zillah (22-2), Granger (19-4) and Colfax are also teams to watch in this year.

The other teams in this year's final 16 are: Cedar Park Christian (14-7), Charles Wright (13-8), Columbia (Burbank) (10-14), Freeman (14-10), Overlake (17-5) and River View (18-6).
