Coupeville girls edge Friday Harbor

Coupeville edged Friday Harbor 47-43 Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006 in a match-up of the top Northwest A/B League girls teams.

The Wolves improve to 5-2 in the leagueÕs A Division. Friday Harbor and Coupeville are tied for second at 4-3 and La Conner is fourth at 1-6.

"I think it's going to be a dogfight for the A group," said Friday Harbor coach Steve Anderson.

Friday Harbor trailed Coupeville by 2 points with 30 seconds to go but the Wolverines were unable to knot the game. "It could've gone either way... They out-played us down the stretch," Anderson said.

Kiersten Radden led the Wolverines with 10 points and Amanda Root contributed 9. The other Friday Harbor scorers were: Beth Kelsey 6, Sarah Anderson 5, Pearl Schuman 4, Sami Gibson 4, Natalie Chevalier 3 and Alysa Kelsey 2.

"We got production from a lot of different areas," Anderson said.

Friday Harbor starts the second half of league play Saturday, Jan. 21. The Wolverines host Orcas at 1:30 p.m.


Wolverine girls shave Lions in squeaker

Friday Harbor girls basketball trimmed Concrete 46-43 Friday, Jan. 13 in a match-up of A Division leaders of the Northwest A/B League. Pearl Schuman hit a short jumper to put the host Wolverines ahead 44-42 with 34 seconds to go and Alysa Kelsey sank two free throws with 13 seconds left to clinch the victory.

Friday Harbor led 35-26 at the start of the fourth quarter but the Lions went on a 11-0 run. Kiersten Radden scored a bucket before Kelsey went baseline-to-baseline to put the Wolverines up 39-37. Chevalier made a block and take-away but the Lions canned a free-throw and three-pointer to retake the lead 41-39 with less than two minutes remaining.

Sarah Anderson drilled her third trey of the game for the Wolverines but the Lions knotted the game 42-42 with a free throw with 1:07 left. Schuman put the Wolverines up by 2 points with 34 seconds left before Concrete added a free throw to keep within a point. Kelsey's pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go forced the Lions into a three-point situation. Friday Harbor's defense denied the trey try.

Schuman led the Wolverines with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Anderson scored 11 points and grabbed 7 boards. Radden contributed 7 points. Chevalier had 7 points and 7 rebounds. Kelsey scored 4 of her 6 points in the fourth quarter. Amanda Root and Sami Gibson chipped in 2 apiece.

Friday Harbor improves to 4-2 in league play and 7-5 overall. The Wolverines are tied for first place in the A Division with Coupeville. Friday Harbor travels to the Wolves' den Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Concrete falls to 3-3 and 7-4.
