Wolverine girls survive late Viking attack

posted 1/22/2006
Sarah Anderson scored 9 of Friday Harbor's final 11 points in the Wolverines' 38-35 home-court, rally-stemming victory over Orcas Island Saturday, Jan. 21.

"We'll take them (victories) any way we can," said Friday Harbor coach Steve Anderson. "Orcas is a tough little team. They made a good comeback. "

"I'm proud of the way they didn't quit, "said Orcas coach Terry Moran-Hodge.

Friday Harbor improves to 5-3 in league play and 8-6 overall. The Vikings are 2-8 and 4-11.

The Wolverines built a 31-19 lead after three periods but the Vikings went on a 11-4 run to pull within 5 points with 3:20 to go. After Friday Harbor's Kiersten Radden made the front end of a one-and-one, Lindsay Tellefsen sank one free throw and Tiffany Holtman hit a pair of charity shots with 40 seconds left to trim the Wolverines' lead to 36-33.

Orcas regained possession after a Friday Harbor turnover 8 seconds later but a Viking missed a three-point attempt that would have tied the game. Anderson's two free throws with 22 seconds remaining forced the Vikings into a two-possession situation.

Suzanna Wrightsman scored a bucket to keep the Vikings' upset bid alive. A Wolverine missed the front end of a one-and-one with 4 seconds on the clock and the Vikings grabbed the rebound and took a timeout with 2 clicks left. The Wolverines denied a game tying shot.

Anderson led all scorers with 15 points. Natalie Chevalier scored 10 for the Wolverines. Other Friday Harbor scorers were: Alysa Kelsey 4, Radden 3, Annie Bryant 2, Pearl Schuman 2 and Amanda Root 2.

Holtman paced the Vikings with 12 points and Jenole Peacock chipped in 10. The other Orcas scorers were: Cara Peacock 5, Wrightsman 3, Lindsay Curtis 2, Melissa Moran-Hodge 2 and Tellefsen 1.
