Friday Harbor girls basketball team used balanced scoring -- five players scored 8 or more points -- in their Northwest A/B League-opening victory. The Wolverines defeated Orcas Island 57-37 Tuesday, Dec. 13.

"That’s cool when that happens," said Friday Harbor coach Steve Anderson.

Sarah Anderson led the Wolverines 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. "She’s been shooting the three-point (shot) well," Coach Anderson said.

Madison Judkins scored 10 for the Wolverines. Pearl Schuman, Annie Bryant and Kiersten Radden contributed 8 apiece. Alysa Kelsey had 10. Katie Shanks and Amanda Root each chipped in 2.

The Wolverines sank 23 of 63 shots, or 38 percent. "When we shoot over 35 percent we usually win," Anderson said.

Friday Harbor built a 28-10 halftime lead and handled the Vikings’ hustling press in the second half. "Their outside shooting in the first half is what made the difference," Anderson said.

The Vikings struggled offensively, shooting 13-for-63, or 20 percent, from the field. "We’re just getting frustrated," said Orcas coach Terry Moran-Hodge. "Those shots will start dropping for us."

Melissa Moran-Hodge, Aly Taylor and Jenole Peacock scored 7 apiece. Other scorers were: Annie Kucklick 5, Cara Peackock 4, Tiffany Holtman 3 and Alexa Nigretto 2.

Friday Harbor improves to 1-0 in conference and 3-1 overall. Orcas is 1-4 overall.
