Vikings send Mules packing; in rematch with Lind-Ritzville Saturday

Story by Matt Pranger

updated 11/15/05
Orcas Island exploited punt-hiking miscues and scored 15 points in a five-minute span of the fourth quarter to upset No. 3-ranked Wahkiakum 21-19 Saturday, Nov. 12 in Cathlamet.

"We were just playing hard the whole game," said Orcas coach Dennis Dahl of the Class B-11 state playoff victory. "We're just lucky things turned out for us."

Orcas (8-4) next plays Lind-Ritzville (7-3), the team that eliminated Vikings in the quarterfinals last season. The game will start after the Friday Harbor-Cascade Christian Class 1A quarterfinal contest, scheduled for 1:15 p.m.

The Vikings trailed Wahkiakum until three minutes to go in the game. Sophomore Chris Troutman tossed a 9-yard halfback pass to Chandler Stone, lifting the Vikings to a 20-19 lead -- the Vikings' first lead of the contest. Miles Murphy kicked the PAT.

The Mules drove the ball to the Vikings' 40-yard line, but the Orcas defense held them on downs and took the ball back with one second on the clock.

"Our defense made stops when we had to," Dahl said.

Wahkiakum led 19-6 with 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. With the blasting, the Mules' long snapper sent the ball over their punter's head. The Vikings took over and Murphy zipped 24 yards into the end zone. A PAT kick failed but the Vikings cut the lead to 19-12.

On Wahkiakim's next possession, the Vikings held the Mules at their 30-yard line. Wahkiakum punted and the ball sailed high again. The Mules' punter prevented an Orcas touchdown by recovering the ball in his end zone but that gave Orcas a safety. The Vikings had trimmed the Mules' lead to 19-14.

The Vikings struggled to move the ball in the windy conditions most of the game but succeeded in the air in the final minutes. Orcas quarterback Josh Mayson -- in his one completion of the second half -- connected with Murphy for a 20-yard gain. Murphy fumbled the ball but Stone pounced on it on the 9-yard line. Two plays later Troutman threaded the ball to Stone in the back of the end zone on the game's deciding play.

The Mules rushed for more than 300 yards and finished with much greater offensive numbers than the Vikings. "Our stats were not that strong offensively," Dahl noted. "Defensively, we just made the plays we needed to make… We were fortunate to hold them to 19, receive those breaks and to be able to pull it out."
