Orcas Island High School’s football team finished in the Class B-11’s top eight the second consecutive year and the Vikings were eliminated by the same team in both years: Lind-Ritzville galloped by Orcas 49-13 in a state quarterfinal at Mount Vernon Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005.

"They were just a better team than we were," said Orcas coach Dennis Dahl, noting the Vikings did not lose "because we didn’t play hard or try."

The Vikings were not expected to return to the quarterfinals after graduating several key starters from last year’s squad. That was compounded by the loss of three starters for the final month."I’m really happy (with our finish)," Dahl said. "I thought these kids really rallied together."

Senior Miles Murphy scored all of the Vikings’ points. Orcas quarterback Josh Mayson connected with Murphy on a 27-yard touchdown reception for the Vikings first touchdown. Murphy also broke free on a 50-yard touchdown run and booted the PAT.

Dahl was proud of senior players’ leadership. "They were just a great group of seniors... They were especially good with younger players," he said.

The Vikings’ four-year players -- Murphy, Cameron Kamphaus, Chandler Stone, Pat Doherty -- filled gaps after the three starters were done for the season. "Our seniors played better than they ever had," Dahl said. "They had to step their game, and they did."

Dahl also commended Mounte Ashby and Woody Ciskowski and two-year player Monte Ashby for their contributions this year. "They were good to have on the team," Dahl said.

Underclassmen played a major role in the Vikings’ success this year and Dahl expects that to continue. "We had young kids that played really hard. If we have some young kids turn out for football next season, we can have another good year," he said.

The Vikings finished the season tied for fourth in the Northwest 1A/B League with a 3-4 record and were 7-5 overall. "We’re good," Dahl said. "It was another fun season. We’re rooting for Friday Harbor now."
