"It was a good way to finish off the season," GrosJacques said of his final match against familiar foe Brian Dellenger of Concrete, who placed fifth. The Wolverines' Jim Gossom and Jacob Foley lost close decisions and were eliminated from the Class A/B State Wrestling Tournament Friday, Feb. 17. Angela Gossom finished third in her group in the Girls Mat Classic. Dellenger and GrosJacques, friends off the mat, fittingly faced off in their final prep match. The two battled each other several times this year in Northwest A/B League action and tournaments. Dellenger won all the matches but GrosJacques kept improving. The Lion came out on top in the end, pinning the Wolverine in two minutes, four seconds but the two grappled without pressure. "That was just a fun match," GrosJacques said. "It was the most relaxed match I've ever wrestled." GrosJacques started the tourney with a flash in the 215-pound competition. He pinned Cimarron Richardson of White Pass in 35 seconds. Robert Marquez of Mabton, the eventual third-place finisher, sent GrosJacques to the consolation bracket by pinning him in one minute, 24 seconds. Keeping his hopes of reaching the medal stand alive, GrosJacques pinned Cody Vandeveter of Cle Elum-Roslyn in 1:23. In his first match of the second day, GrosJacques pinned Nathan Cress of Wahkiakum in 33 seconds. He advanced to the consolation semifinal where Bill Chabonneau of Oroville recorded a fall in 4:35. Gossom, a 160-pound senior, finished his high school career among some of the state's best wrestlers. Klaus Sorenson of Wahkiakum edged Gossom 9-6 in the first round. "I wrestled pretty good, he just wrestled better," Gossom said. "I just missed a few moves." Quanah Redtail of Tonasket, the eventual seventh-place finish beat Gossom 14-0 in the consolation bracket. "I'm a little disappointed but not too bad," Gossom said of his performance. Zach Bogle of Highland (Cowichen) defeated Foley 12-4 in the opening round of the 135-pound competition. The junior, who was ill in the morning, wrestled tougher in his second match but lost a 4-2 decision to Alex Bowely of Ocosta (Westport). "There's always next year," Foley said. |

Freshman Angela Gossom went 1-2 in the Girls Mat Classic. Heather Hall of North Beach trimmed Gossom 17-13. Ann Thomas of Lake Roosevelt, the group's winner, needed five minutes, 14 seconds to pin Gossom. The Wolverine bounced back by pinning Crystal Steeby of Clarkston in 3:30. "It was fun," she said. "I didn't expect them to be as good as they are." GrosJacques and Gossom receive awardsPhotos by Jacob Foley
