Tyler Brow waited two years for a chance to step up to the plate. Friday Harbor High School baseball team's manager made the most of his shot -- the senior cracked two hits and drove in a pair of runs in the same inning during the first of two Wolverine victories over Shoreline Christian Saturday, April 28.

"It was exciting. I haven't played in maybe … 12 years," said Brow, who kept beaming two days later.

"He's a pretty happy kid," said Friday Harbor coach Rich.

Brow's teammates, the Wolverine fans and the Shoreline players and their boosters went wild after the two singles, as if he smacked a game-winning grand slam over the Hamlin Field fence. "Everybody was cheering," Warin said.

"Not only were my teammates happy for me, three of the Shoreline Christian players came over to our (post-game) huddle and handed me the game ball and the sportsmanship award," Brow said. "That was really exciting."

Warin and assistant coach Steve Schramm signed, dated and noted Brow's stats on the ball. "I thank them a lot," Brow said.

Brow tried out for the Wolverines last year but didn't make the cut. He still pitched in though, staying on as a team manager, a job he's performed the past five years for the Friday Harbor football team. Mid-way through this season Warin started working Brow into practices.

Warin, who started his ball career at Hamlin Field as a Little Leaguer, rewarded Brow for his dedication. On a 2-2 count, Brow connected, sending the ball curving past third base. "I thought it was a foul," Brow said. His teammates knew otherwise and yelled: "Run, Brow, Run!"

Brow reached first base and eventually scored.

He returned to the plate after the Wolverines batted around. The Shoreline pitcher threw some heat down the middle and Brow smashed it over the center fielder's head for his second base hit.

Brow stole second, advanced to third and went home on a throwing error.

"It's been fun and I'm going to miss everybody on the team once the season is over," Brow said.

Friday Harbor rallies, shuts down Nooksack Valley

Friday Harbor broke out for five runs in the fourth inning to knock off Nooksack Valley 5-3 in a home non-league baseball game Friday, April 20. The Wolverines improve to 2-0 against Northwest District Class 1A teams.
