Orting ousts Friday Harbor baseball squadBy Matt Pranger Orting eliminated Friday Harbor 7-6 from the Tri-District Baseball Tournament Saturday, May 12 at Cascade Christian High School in Puyallup. The Cardinals, who qualified for the Class 1A State Tournament, scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Friday Harbor vanquished Vashon Island 2-1 earlier Saturday. With tied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, No. 9 hitter Michael Sandifer singled home Ryan Aylward. Solid defense dominated Friday Harbor's and Vashon's game -- each team turned a pair of double plays and a couple of runners were picked off. "It was a good game. You just had to battle," Aylward said. Friday Harbor went up 1-0 in the first inning. Leadoff batter Matt Rothlisberger reached base on an error and Forrest Crawford laid down a successful bunt. Rothlisberger advanced to third after Cole Franklin hit into a fielder's choice. Rothlisberger scored on Richie Ochoa's sacrifice fly. The Pirates tied the game in the fourth inning. Max Bean led off with a single. Eric Anderson reached base on balls. Justin Calhoun hit into a fielder's choice and Bean went to third. He scored on Chris Allman's sacrifice. Albert Strasser hit a one-out single in the seventh. Aylward reached base on balls and Strasser went to third on a passed ball. Jordan Nash attempted a squeeze bunt but Strasser was tagged at home. With two outs and the winning run on second, the smallest Wolverine came to the plate. Sandifer was banking on not getting respect. "I'm the No. 9 hitter and usually get a first-pitch fastball, so I'm getting used to it," he said. "I just jumped on it and hit it over the first baseman's head," Sandifer said. "It felt really good to come through for my team." Aylward raced home on Sandifer's shot into short right field. "Sandifer was clutch," Aylward said of Sandifer, who was mobbed by his teammates. Ochoa earned the win, striking out five, allowing three hits, walking three and hitting one batter. Crawford, Ochoa, Aylward, Strasser and Nash hit singles for the Wolverines. Strasser also had a sacrifice bunt. Friday Harbor scored one run in the top of the first inning against Orting. Rothlisberger reached base on balls and went to third on Crawford's double to deep left-center. Rothlisberger was tagged at home after Franklin hit into a fielder's choice. Crawford, who advanced to third on the play, scored on Ochoa's sacrifice fly. Orting went up 3-1 in the bottom of the inning on a double by Jesse Bechtold, singles by Zack Sowards, Braden Cordes, Nick Wilkins, a walk and a throwing error. Rothlisberger limited the damage by striking out the final two batters with the sacks full. Friday Harbor drew within a run in the second. Strasser drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Justin James. Two outs later Sandifer was hit by a pitch and Rothlisberger singled home James. The Cardinals added three more runs in the bottom of the second to go up 6-2. Bechtold rapped a base hit and Kye Winter walked. Sowards smashed a one-out, two-run triple and scored on Dan White's sacrifice bunt. The Wolverines knotted the game in the sixth. Aylward led off with a double. Sandifer reached base on an error and Aylward scored on the play. Rothlisberger worked a walk and Crawford loaded the bases with a single. Franklin bashed a two-run double and Strasser drove in the tying run with a two-out single. Friday Harbor loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth but couldn't score. The Wolverines were an out from extending the game -- possibly on another day as the light was fading -- when Orting's young players came through. Freshman Braden Cordes singled. He went to second on sophomore Dan White's base hit and scored on freshman Nick Wilkins shot down the third baseline. |
