Wolverines win 12-7

Friday Harbor edged Coupeville 12-7 in a Class 1A District 1 playoff game Thursday, Nov. 2. The sixth-ranked Wolverines (8-1) next play eighth-ranked Orting (8-1) in Sumner Tuesday, Nov. 7 in Bi-District match-up. The winner of that game advances to the first round of the state playoffs Saturday, Nov. 11.

Friday Harbor senior Tyler Hart returned a punt 65 yards to put the Wolverines up 6-0 in the second quarter. The Wolves went up 7-6 with 7:48 to go in the 1st half. Hart scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 15-yard option play with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter.

After Friday Harbor thwarted a Coupeville advance deep into Friday Harbor territory, the Wolverines sustained a drive nearly to the end zone to preserve the victory in the defense-dominated game.

"Trent Roberts gave us a speech - he told us to give it our all and leave nothing on the field," said defensive lineman Eric Wells. "It motivated us to stop them."

With about two minutes to go on a 4th-and-10 on the Wolves 25-yard line, senior Trent Roberts zipped around the end on a reverse to pick up the game-clinching first down.

"We didn't play well in the first half," said defensive lineman Michael GrosJacques. "We talked at halftime and came out fired up and won the game. We played a lot better in the second half. We had some key defensive plays. We have a lot of work to do. The next game is coming up fast."

Coach Richard Ledford said the team played "hard enough to win. "We're happy to win." Game time for Tuesday is still to be determined.
