Playoff schedule drained Wolverine football teamposted 11/15/2006 The Wolverines trimmed Coupeville Thursday, Nov. 2 and routed Orting Tuesday, Nov. 7 before meeting the Montesano Bulldogs in the first round of Class 1A State Tournament. "They (Montesano) played a hard game. Our kids played a hard game… We just seemed a step or thought behind," Ledford said. "Three physical games in a 10-day period took their toll," Ledford said. The Wolverine coach complemented his team's defensive effort after they lost senior quarterback Cole Franklin to a neck injury in the second quarter. "Their offense didn't score on us from that point," Ledford said, noting the Bulldogs' third touchdown came on a kickoff return. Franklin was hit in the helmet by a Montesano player's helmet. He suffered muscular, but not skeletal trauma. "It was a very painful injury, but one he can recover from," Ledford said. Friday Harbor completed the season 9-2. During the past three years, the Wolverines made three consecutive Class 1A's Sweet 16 appearances, played in two quarterfinals and two semifinals. The 2006 squad's four-year players went 38-7 in their high school careers and the three-year seniors were 32-4. "That's not too shabby," Ledford noted. "I'm extremely proud of our players and the coaching staff," he added. "The last few weeks have been brutal."
