Wolverines win in shootout

Story contributed by Mark Fishaut

With apologies to Dickens, it was the best of games; it was the worst of games. The Lady Wolverines journeyed east to play the much improved Concrete Lions. Play began briskly, with only a crossbar keeping Friday Harbor from going ahead in the first five minutes.

That miss seemed to turn off the switch as the game settled into dullness for the remainder of the half, with some sloppy work yielding a goal at about 30 minutes. The girls were determined to come out fired up in the second period and did exactly the opposite, allowing Concrete to score a fine goal four minutes into the session.

Play ebbed and flowed, echoing the weather, which alternated from downpour to bright sun. Kate Fyrquist overcame her early uncertainty at stopper and crushed in an unassisted beauty in the 58th minute to bring the score back to 1-2. However, the gloom returned shortly thereafter as the Lions again took a two goal lead in the 67th minute.

Then everything changed.

The Wolverines found themselves and began to play with the commitment and confidence they had displayed against South Whidbey five days earlier. The rest of the match evoked memories of the 2005 Champions League Final in which Liverpool did the impossible overcoming AC Milan.

Shelby Ness scored at close range from Lauren Hoover at 76 minutes and tied the match at 79 minutes 58 seconds from Whitney Porter. The ball never crossed into the Friday Harbor end for the entire overtime, and despite a number of chances, the team was unable to find the finishing touch.

So it went to penalty kicks. Hannah Snow made two brilliant setting the stage for Captain Lindsey Youngquist. She spotted the ball for the 5th PK and struck it home with the assurance we have come to expect of her for the victory. Ice cream cones all around!!
